What do you say when your orchid is damaged?

How difficult do you find it to be gracious when someone damages a bloom or a cherished orchid??

My mom broke an unopened flower off of my only surviving Catasetum this afternoon!

My Orchidglade 'Davie Ranches'!:~(

I know that it was an accident, but...

I just put it back up and walked away trembling!

I couldn't think of anything nice to say!

So I made a strong drink, then just left and went out to work in the back pasture for the rest of the day.

I wanted to scream, but didn't think that it would be helpful.

I'm sure that I got pretty pale

Other than the obvious reasons for the horror...

It's the first blooms that I've ever been able to get from the fricken' thing.

I lost last years spike to a couple of slugs and was pissed then.

And I lost my other couple, because they just plain hated me!

I'm pretty sure that had to be the reason.

It couldn't have been anything that I did!

This year, I've completely babied it.

I finally went to an orchid club meeting last night (only the second one that I've made it to), and the local AOS judge (a new member, I guess) said that it would've come in first (for the monthly club contest) if the flowers were more open.

The first bloom, out of three, was just about fully open.

My Catt. skinneri'Casa Luna'(the new undamaged buds have opened!!) came in second and my Bulbo. falcatum'Standing Tall' came in third!

I almost swept the whole thing.

I felt a little sheepish about it, but it not like I declined anything!

I think that more than a few people were somewhat annoyed about it.

I never show up and then...

Wham!

After an extremely long development period, they're just opening.

I've never had anything take that long!

I'm not really sure, but I'd say that the spike has been in developement for several months!

I haven't even taken photos yet and now it's virtually ruined!

Maybe, I'll duct tape it on for photos!! ;~)

Just pretend that you don't notice it!

Sigh...!
