... before you had A/C?

This is a semi-hijack from another thread, where two folks mentioned opening the windows in the day during southern summers. Caught my attention because we did the opposite: opened the windows at night and closed them (and pulled heavy drapes across) in the daytime. And cooked on the porch so that the kitchen would stay cool. To this day, it seems reversed to open windows and let the heat in. BTW, mum's first A/C was purchased in the mid-70's, not for cooling, but to help de-humidify the air.
