RTA inset cabinets inset or full overlay?
Comments (42)Hi, I started using Conestoga back in 2010 when Casey was about the only one here who had them. I was nervous but took the plunge. Love their RTAâÂÂs! In my last house my husband and I built this kitchen with full overlays. The finish was still perfect three years later when I sold. In the house IâÂÂm in now we are doing inset cabinetry in the master bath. One is not harder than the other to assemble. Although I buy my cabinets from Chad at Cabinetmakerschoice the cabinetjoint has the best Conestoga assembly videos....See MorePics of partial overlay? Give up full overlay or raised panel?
Comments (16)I like partial overlay. In my last home, I had partial overlay in my kitchen, living room built-ins and office cabinetry. They were all custom cabinets. The house was a tiny (880 s.f.) 1960's box near the beach. There wasn't much dictating style for the neighborhood (we had a flat roof and our neighbors were in an 1800's Victorian), so we just did what we wanted. In my current home, we have inset cabinets in the kitchen, which I love, but I think if we didn't have a budget for the inset I would have gone with partial overlay again. I just like the look. I think the above examples are beautiful. Here are a few examples from my previous home of partial overlay (sorry, only one kitchen example). This was our living room. We installed the fireplace and surrounding cabinets which were partial overlay. This was a Tuff Shed that we turned into a detached office. Our lot size was only 2200 s.f. so space was tight! The previous owners had installed the shed, but when I was pregnant with our daughter, we turned the shed into our office with custom partial overlay cabinets. Here is the partial overlay kitchen cabinetry (and laundry room beyond) that was installed by the previous owner....See MorePartial Overlay vs Full Overlay?
Comments (7)I'm getting partial overlay for several reasons (I like the looks of both so looks is not one of them): my cabinets go all the way to the ceiling which is most likely crooked so I would be scraping it with the upper doors, I can also use the extra space on top to install the crown molding (i.e., attach it from the front rather than top of the cabinet). The crown will be tine but it will fit without sacrificing the space. The special corner arrangement I have would require additional fillers for FO, thus, more loss of space. Last but not least, the door style I picked comes as PO (it seems like the doorstyle is either FO or PO but you can't pick a door and a style separately; my experience at least and I had quotes from 3 different places, all said the same). I enclosed a picture of my old kitchen which is not pretty but PO. You can see it's tiny so every inch counts. Here is a link that might be useful: old PO kitchen...See MoreShiloh Cabinetry - Inset vs. Full Overlay? Who has them?
Comments (41)I'm looking at white oak with one of the lighter grey stains @MA Scag - I would not have the beautiful white oak and then put a grey stain on it. You might as well then not spend the money for white oak. The whole point of spending extra on white oak is due to its appearance. Remove the grey stain from your choice. Or, if you really want grey cabinetry, then don't get white oak and instead choose one of the painted grey finishes. See @Sammy's comment above which has a link to @Suzanne Brown's beautiful Shiloh kitchen with grey painted cabinets....See More- 7 years agolast modified: 7 years ago
