Do you handle the heat as well as you used to?

I've been working in the garden a lot as usual, but this year I noticed quite a difference in my heat tolerance. The two main changes are that when I exert myself in the heat my face gets bright red and I continue to sweat even when I move to a cool location. This has nothing to do with hot flashes, BTW. Those are far behind me.

I began to wonder if something was wrong with me after experiencing cool, clammy skin and excessive perspiration in Home Depot, which was quite air-conditioned. I had come into the store from a hot car.

But then I recently read that people 65 and over do not handle heat the same way they did when they were younger. I am just 65. I wouldn't have thought this is something that magically changes at that age, but I'm hoping this explains the changes I've noticed.

Anyone else?

I don't handle heat well at all. The back of my neck just pours! I also get red faced. Can't wait till cooler weather comes back. I'm 64, by the way.

As long as I'm in the house I do okay. LOL If I have to do yard work, at the cabin, I do it early in the morning and quit by 12:00 noon.
I blame it on my weight rather than age.

I made a similar observation about myself this summer. The heat is harder on me. Susan, be careful, work in the a.m. like Grammahony. Then pack it up and go inside.

I don't handle heat well at all! Any yard work has to be done before it reaches 80 degrees, or I will literally collapse. Will make it
into the house, but will be no good for at least a couple of hours. This can cause a problem, because we have nearly .5/acre of veg garden & berries, and they need to be tended to, and I'm the one who does it. Getting old sucks rocks!

Susan, Just can't get past the 65 to make a comment about the heat. You look so much younger. I remember the mirror picture.

You will sweat until your core tmeperature comes under control. When outside and working, the sweat is evaporating at a rate that almost equals the sweat output. Sweat output can exceed the evaporation rate when your temperature rises. If you go into a cooler building, and slow down your movement, the evaporation rate slows and you notice that you are wet.

Now that I am older, much older, I find that I handle the heat about the same as when younger, but that is because I can adjust my activity. Being retired and more sensible, if I start to become too hot, I take a breather or quit, a luxury I did not have earlier in life because then, the job had to be done irregardless of sweat.

I remember many a night in my youth when I could not sleep at night due to the heat and would be wrung-out the next day. I was so miserable that I considered going out and laying on the lawn were it not for the misquitoes and chiggers. (Electricity had not come to the rural farms at that date.)

It is this memory that tempers my choice of possible retirement places to live.

My elderly mother claimed that she could stand the heat until the temperature passed the high 90s F, but I think that her peception may have dulled with age and that she could have been closer to heat stroke than she knew, but she could take the heat much better than me.

I hate the heat. I had to work in such a hot work place and every year seemed to be worse than the previous one. I was thinking about that just today as I was walking across a parking lot, but I smiled to myself knowing I was only going to be in the heat for a short while.
I do my yard work early in the morning too. I would do it in the evening as well, but most evenings are taken up with Anna's martial arts classes and by the time I get home from there, eat dinner and clean the kitchen I just can't get in the mood to go work outside.

I've never handled the heat well because I don't sweat. I get sick in the heat. Add high humidity and I'm miserable and have to stay inside.

NO, Not at all. I used to be able to hang out in the heat all day and now I can barely stand it for 15 minutes. It makes me feel really bad. Gives me headaches, makes me very tired and just overall icky.

Let me add that I am only 35 and the heat still really gets to me.

I hate it and it's REALLY hot here. It's 106 right now at 6:30 p.m. I am counting down the days until Fall.

Not at all.....it zaps the energy right out of me! Can't stand summers anymore.

Susan, I second what Ron said! If I am recalling correctly, you're the blonde with blue (or green) eyes who wears glasses? I know you have grown kids, but I assumed you had them VERY young, because in all honesty, your pictures made me think you were younger than me. I am 52. I'm sorry you're feeling the heat more, but I sure wish I had your genes!

It's been very humid. I can take heat,it just feels like pressure to me. But when my face sweats and I feel the humidity,I can't stand it! I find myself wiping my face about six times a day. I'm 55, female, maybe it has something to do with menopause.

Well I've been complaining about the heat since I was 50 and I'm 58 now. My theory is that your true nature exerts itself as you age and apparently my true nature wants to be Icelandic. One of my friends here in New Jersey can't stand the cold winters anymore and is just waiting for her husband to retire so she can move to Florida.

Even my 25 year old daughter wants to move to Canada because she doesn't like the hot, humid summers of the Middle Atlantic states.

I'm with Leslie...for me I think it is weight ...I used to bake in the sun and loved it...

I played softball in the heat until I was 50 years old...on two teams and subbed for another...

Now I think they'd have to get a bucket of cold water and oxygen if I hobbled to first base.

If it is over 75 I start getting uncomfortable.

Yesterday it was in the 80's....I watered the flowers...Just standing there I sweat so bad I couldn't see. It was dripping off my forhead , my ears, my nose and my hair...it was terrible.

I am one that can't handle the heat very well, but one reason is that 4 of the last 6 summers I have been pregnant so that has a lot to do with it. What really gets to me is the humidity, I feel like I can't even breath and the heat and humidity just drags me down and my sucks my energy right out of me. So I try and get up and garden in the mornings around 6 and go out with tons of bug spray and weed at 8 at night until I can't see anymore. I had heat stroke 8 years ago and ever since then I haven't been able to handle the heat as well. But now I am the sized of a 8 month pregnant woman even though I am not due until the middle of November, and Hayden is only 11 months old and not walking so everywhere I go I have to carry him.

The heat doesn't bother me. I do like it cool at night.

The only time I have really been bothered by heat was when we rode the motorcycle to Arizona in July. I was miserably hot and told Jammer that no one better say "but it's a dry heat". It was HOT! I guess I'm just not a desert person.

I don't mine the heat its the humidity I don't like.

Heat warnings around here always advise people to check on older neighbors. I always assumed it was because they are more likely to live alone. Maybe it is because of a correlation between age and heat tolerance. Interesting.

I've never handled heat well, but this year I will NOT show it. That's because I b*tched and complained all spring and early summer about our lousy weather. I begged for the heat. Well, it's now here. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Well, actually, I don't have any problem with the heat. I am outside all day, but mostly in shade. Yesterday I had to walk down our very long driveway to leave some food and water for the doves and squirrels down by the gate. The driveway is oyster shell...so, bright white in the sun, and it was very hot and I was glad to get back to the shade.

I live without a/c, and prefer it. Even tho I live on the Texas coast, and temps are well into the 90's every day, I am not uncomfortable. In fact, I sleep under a light blanket at night. But, I have fans, and I couldn't live without them. Being near the coast, we usually have a breeze at night, and a little during the day.

I sweat a lot all day long but I drink a lot. I keep a cooler outside stocked with water, gatorade, sodas, lemonade and orange juice, so I don't have to run inside to get something. I also take breaks and sit down often.

I am often outside until well after dark, finishing up my chores by flashlight. I have too much to take care of for one person, not just the animals but I have a big yard, so
I can't think very much about the heat. It's just a fact of life...but fortunately, I can handle it okay.

I used to tell people I was a lizard looking for a hot rock. We only have a few weeks of really hot weather, in the upper 90's, but I think with the global warming, we are getting hotter for longer periods of time. We live at 6000' in the desert southwest and the sun is intense. Nights cool off for us and with fans it's great. Two summers ago, I was a hermit inside during our brutal summer. Last year I forced myself to be out during the day (too much garden to neglect) but spent a lot of time in the shade. I had planted a mini orchard several years ago, and the trees were finally large enough to throw a lot of shade. This year is better. I'm not in the shade as much, but I do come in the house wringing wet, cool off, then go back outside. I should buy stock in a sunscreen company. I am not looking for that hot rock any longer!!

Never did handle it well! Back in PA-I was real obese and hated hot, humid weather..understandable. But when I moved to FL at 54 yrs old-everyone here told me I'd "get used to it" in a year or so. NOT...and I've been here 10 yrs, and 220 lbs lighter!! I feell like a bear only I hibernate all summer! LOL! I can't wait until late Sept here so I can once again open my doors & windows and turn off this AC.... I know, I know...once a country girl, always a country girl!!

It never used to bother me, but this summer it has been something else. We had such a long cold winter, long cold (almost non-existent) spring, I swore I'd glory in the sun and heat. Nope. The past 2 weekends doing very mild yard and garden work, I've gotten very sick from the sun and heat. Last Sunday, just a couple of hours out fishing, I nearly passed out by the time I walked back to the car. I'd had plenty of cold water to drink and wore a long sleeved cotton shirt to prevent sunburn. I forgot my brimmed hat, that might have helped shade my head and face. But we had fun and caught fish.

Ever since menopause I have not been able to take the heat. I have to get outside work done early or I can't do it. And I hate all the heat waves we have been having here this year. But what really gets to me is trying to sleep when it is hot. We don't have AC, just ceiling fans which helps but are annoying in their own way. I never sleep well when it is hot. And I still have the occasional hot flash and night sweats after 13 years!

Heat and humidity never used to bother me to much until last year (I don't sweat) so always took breaks and drank water, but last year really got ill, that fixed it for me, even found out I can get to town shop and back home by 9am.

I try to get any gardening done before 11:00AM,if you wait until night the mosquitoes are as bad as the heat.

Can't handle the heat. Usually when it starts to hit the 80's is when I feel it. It gets harder for me to breath. I feel nauseous and may get diarrhea. Then I'm down for the count for a few hours recouping. It zaps all my strength. I try to do my gardening and errands in the morning or later on in the afternoon. I remember one vacation our family was on. We went to South Carolina. It was 105 degrees. While Wayne and the kids were at the beach I was watching them from the sliding glass door in our condo with the AC full blast. I won't be moving South any time soon! lol NancyLouise

I just came in from working in the heat. I was only out there for an hour, but it just about does me in. And even though it was warm, it was overcast. I just can't work in the sun.

    warning this is a vent

i've always hated hot weather-i don't sweat "much" either, so lately i've been trying to drink water every few minutes while i'm outside--i take two prescriptions that warn you not to get too hot!!
i just got a letter from my principal-she's having an all day training session aug 9 at her house on galveston island!!! dress cool-we'll be outside all day!!!
being at the beach from 10 til 5 will be sheer torture, i'm 55 and she's older-how can she stand it??? (let along the fact that it's a two hour drive in each direction from my house--what is she thinking)???
    i like her anyway-she's a good principal!

Oh, noÂI hope she means you'll be outside in the shade all day!

I never could handle it, especially the humidity. As a kid, skinny, I would be sick in the heat. We didn't have a/c. My grandmother had heart problems and the dr. made them get a/c. I would willingly ride the half hour in a vehicle without a/c so I could go there to cool off! I didn't sweat much then, but in the past 22 years (thanks, DS) when I got pregnant with him I started sweating buckets. I still do. I still don't tolerate the heat. Age and weight have nothing to do with it, in my opinion. Though health does.
