when do you break the rules?

What would you do?

Office fire alarm is being tested. Shrill blasts last 10 - 30 seconds and repeat, at irregular intervals, over more than two hours. You can't work. You notice colleagues walking around with expressions similar to Wile E. Coyote's post-anvil. All complaints about office atmosphere are SUPPOSED to be sent to the facilities office, which sometimes responds to them.

Do you make your complaint through the normal channels, or do something that will make a stink/difference?

I did the latter. I used the company-wide email to complain. Ten people immediately responded in agreement. I got chewed out by a manager in another department and by our human resources office. I apologized. But I am not sorry. The noise has stopped and my fingers have almost stopped trembling.
