When Pets Rule the Roost
These regal canines and felines make it clear: It's their home — you just live in it
One of the great things about the Houzz community is that many members seem to be pet lovers. In fact, in many photos, it looks as though the pets reign supreme in the household. Just call them HRH, for His or Her Royal Highness.
Growing up, pets in my household were always royal; we found them stealing our favorite spots on the sofa, curling up beneath the covers and basically ruling the roost. We simply never could find the heart to say no to those adorable faces.

Finally, you’re gone! Time to test out the chaise longue and feel like 19th-century royalty.
Just another day in the life of Their Royal Highnesses, moving from one lounge spot to the next as the hours tick by. Another nap in the built-in dog bed today? Sure, why not? So far, they’ve had only two.
Royal pets not only rule the roost, but silhouettes of their comrades get worked into the decor. By early afternoon, the lighting is just right to admire the aptly chosen wallpaper.
Hooray, you’re home for a lunch break! Yes, HRH knows you’ve been hard at work all morning, but the couch is a fine spot while you pay bills on the kitchen stool.
Time for a quick stroll around the neighborhood. Royal Highnesses do not shower by hose; they refresh by outdoor pet shower — basking in afternoon sunlight, of course.
You have to go back already? Oh, man. HRH will simply have to sit on a velvet throne and ponder your absence.
Don’t forget, HRH needs privacy! Therefore, hide the litter box inside a wall nook.
A run around the neighborhood may have worn this Royal Highness straight out. Better offer some love.
You’re home early from work! Time to catch a quick movie. These HRHs assume that since they’re smaller, they get the front row.
Whew, the dinner party wore this Highness straight out. Off to bed. Your bed.
The day after the party, HRH may experience a bit of a hangover and will recover in the usual way: a day of lounging.
