need yard advice we r new

I ran across an advertisement for this site while sitting inthe ob drs waiting room and thought this would be just the place for my husband and I too look for advice on helping our yard look not so barren... i would love to knw where on here i need to look and read because there is so many different places n forums.. we have mixed shade sun areas and wet, moist,dry,hilly n flat areas.. we need so much help.. any guideance would be appreicitaed..

Welcome to the Garden Party!

Up at the top of this page, is a tab listed as "forums." There are two forums listed that would be very helpful to you. "Lawns" and "Lawn Care."

So much will depend on the area in which you live. There are cold weather grasses that can't stand the summer heat in the south, and hot weather grasses that can't take many nights of below freezing temps. One good idea is to look at your nearby neighbors to see what works in their yards.

Oh how I wish I could see my yard. I don't think spring will ever get here. There are forums here for anything you want to know that is garden/yard related. Once you get the info you need on grass,you can then hop over to maybe the landscape design to get some ideas on where to go next. If you'd like to put in a small perennial garden,then go to the perennial forum etc. etc. A good thing might be to spend a little time just browsing all the different forums to get a feel for how some of them are set up and the things they offer you.Maybe a good place to start is the Louisiana/Mississippi forum. You may feel at home there for awhile and then start visiting other forums as well. Be sure to stop in here though and let us know how it's all going.

I agree to remove the large shrubs that are too near the window. The small tree/shrub in left front yard, would probably look better if thinned out and create a small mulched area around it. If you are going to put flowers or ground cover around said shrub, then make it large enough, not a little tiny ring around it. As for the shrubs in front of the right hand window, I personally don't like what some refer to as "meatballs" for landscaping. You either have to keep them trimmed or let them go natural, which is my personal preference. Still you want them to be below the window. I like the idea of a patio or larger landing at the front entrance. Not sure exactly what would work or be in the budget. Congrats on new home!

Need cooking advice for my new Wolf R364C charbroil/gas range

Have had Wolf with Charboiler for 7 years. I assume the design hasn't changed. Don't know if the "reverberator plate" is the same as my "blank off" plate, which is a small SS plate that you put on the IR honey comb to reduce the heat. For what we grill, usually don't use it to get a full sear (and does it ever sear). But, curiousity led me to buy another plate and cut it into about a 4" and 7" plate to give different heat levels and by putting one of the shorter ones towards the back for a two stage, front sear and rear cooler finishing part. Works pretty well. As for cleaning, we used to follow manual and put damp cloth over grid to soften it up, but saw in a Wolf cooking demonstration where they just put a shallow aluminum throw away backing pan right over the grid for about a 10" burnoff after grilling, and that pretty much vaporizes residue to a white dust. Then every few times just pop out the whole liner and get it with Bar Keepers Friend and a SS scrubbie in the sink. Hope this helps . . .

Your builder should be able to get in touch with the vendor to provide samples and locations of each house in the area where the same colors were used for siding and roof. If the builder can't do it, contact CertainTeed directly.

Welcome!

Another good forum on GW is "New to Gardening"... where you can ask any ol' question and be assured that a] no one is going to laugh at it; and b] there are a lot of experienced gardeners who can and will answer, although it is advisable to see if someone has already asked (scroll to the bottom of the page and 'search' using keywords to see previous postings). And don't forget to check into the forum for your state or area, since what works best in one area may be a disappointment elsewhere.

Meanwhile, do keep in touch with us at the party. We're pretty casual and off-topic here, but most of us are experienced gardeners and we'd love to hear how things are going for you.

That's a lot of different terrains and it might take some time to figure out how to plant those areas.They take different type of plantings.
As others have suggested, I would go local at this time. Find out what would work in your climate zone/soil type etc.

Considering that there are a couple of children involved, I'd think of a way to make a family friendly "garden" close to the house to start with. Some grass, play area, table and chairs and barbeque area.
In my mind there's plenty of time to learn how to develop the rest of the property.

Thank you to everyone,
we have been busy in our shop this week and Been unable to get on til today.. I will take everyone's advice and be sure and go slow.. I did stop at the local home depot and buy some pansies and primerose and plant around out white mailbox and added a spring wreath.. I found a couple metal garden stakes with mini watering cans an added them to the bed.. I was in desperate need for color...I'm gonna try and figure out how to post a picture that way I can let everyone see our yard.. And once again Thanks to Everyone and I'll be sure that we drop in often..

Bug, smart move getting winter/spring annuals, such as pansies and primerose for a touch of color. They are my eye candy plants for spring. Get ready for summer color and keep going back to your local nursery for plants.
In the meanwhile, take the time to figure out the big picture.
