'Holes in lawn'

I have several 10 foot areas in which there are shallow holes in the lawn. They are about 1 inch deep and 1 inch in diameter. I can also see a very small tunnel in that hole. I haven't seen any insects around them or in that area. The grass in these areas is turning brown and dying - rapidly. I live in zone 4 and my grass is a mixture of ??. I just noticed these holes about 2-3 weeks ago. I have to be careful what I put in the backyard because we have a dog. Please - help me!!!

Are there moles in tunnels?
Are there chipmunks nesting?
Are there squirrels digging for food?

Maybe there are cicadas or some black wasps that nest in the ground.

It appears right after I cut the grass. I do not really see any ants. The holes are the size of 3mm or so.

Someone dug up a tree or shrub and filled the hole with compost or mulch. While it seemed like a good idea at the time, when compost or mulch decomposes, it has no volume left. In order to fill that hole you will need a mineral based soil. Sand and clay are minerals. Your dirt is probably minerals. Eventually you will have it filled. I'd continue doing what you're doing until it stops. Or you could dig out the 18 inches and refill all at once. If you do that be sure to mound the top of it because even minerals will continue to settle for three years.

I used Milky spore on my grub-infested lawn. It is a fungus that the grubs eat where it kills them and in turn the spore multiplies in order for more grubs to eat it. They say one application will work for years and years. I have yet to find any grubs or grub-spots in my lawn this year (I am crossing my fingers!) - the milky spore is also safe for animals if you have pets roaming around your lawn & garden.

Does your lawn ever go dormant or turn brown in the winter? If it always stays green all winter, then that grass is dead and needs to be reseeded or patched with living sod.

Moles or Voles is my guess. Might be time to go to HOme depot to get some mole traps and some poison pellets (which appeared to have worked in my lawn).

If the holes or tunnels are really only 1 inch in diameter, I'm guessing wasps or bees. Try watching the holes for a while and see if anything flies in or out. I have had them before and sprayed wasp & hornet spray into the hole, saturating the area, them filled the hole with soil and saturated the soil with more spray. Later on walk by and if you see bees buzzing around where the hole was, spray them, too.

It could also be chipmunks, but their holes are more like 2 - 2.5 inch diameter. I've got them now, too. You can keep filling the holes, but they keep digging them out again. You have to trap & release them, or humanely destoy them, first.
