Sod not going to edge of yard....

We purchased a builder spec home, that was sodded with Bermuda.

One thing that I noticed is that the sod doesn't reach the edges of the house (flower beds, sides of house). There is about a 6 inch gap between the edges of the brick flower bed and the sod. It's like they started the sod 6 inches away from everything.

Is this common? Can I cut strips and lay it down in those sections? Did someone cut some corners here?

I'm no expert but I've heard bermuda will spread anywhere, so it will most likely spread independently to those areas. How long have the spots been empty for?

I'd personally go for Penncross Creeping Bentgrass is you are going for that .5-.75" height. It is adapted well for that height. Its spreading ability is very lovely, much faster than KBG. I put an all bent backyard in last fall that I mow with a reel mower at .625" and it looked wonderful last fall. Here are a few pictures when the lawn was just over two months old planted from seed: Bent really hasn't been to complicated to take care of for me. The only issue I had is snow mold this spring, but since you live in VA, that shouldn't be a problem. Since you have an irrigation system, and a reel mower, you should be all set to tackle bent. It loves lots of nitrogen, which I will be giving in the form of Turfbuilder this spring, milorganite every 21-30 days this summer, Turfbuilder late summer, and winterizer in November. Not too hard of a plan to follow. If you have a good stand of bent, you shouldn't need any preemergents or weed killers. You can find Penncross Creeping Bentgrass seed at www.outsidepride.com or at your local Lesco. Seed your lawn at 1-2 lbs per 1000 sq feet, and you can pick the seed up for $12-$18 per lb. Disease is always cause by environmental conditions, your lawn being in zone 6 stresses it further causing the disease. You can spray fungicides on it to prevent it. The most common disease in Zoysia is Large Patch and Dollar Spot, Google it.

I only have experience with Bermuda vs. St. Augustine and Bermuda vs. Buffalo -- not Bermuda vs. Bermuda, BUT, do you think the new sod is going to keep the Common from coming back up? The HOA thing is a problem, but I would probably water the dirt for a few days after step 2, then Roundup again to give the old stuff a thorough beatdown. If time and appearance wasn't an issue, I'd probably repeat 2 or 3 times. Again, I've never tried to intentionally grow Bermuda, but having spent a lot of time trying to kill it, I wouldn't expect one round of Roundup to do it.

I'd also get rid of the grubs before they start laying eggs! LOL. I'm in Nevada dealing with compacted sand, so I know your difficulties. It's the only soil I've tried to dig, only to have the shovel bounce right off the top! You should have some nutrients in the clay soil, so it may be richer than you are thinking. If you have the time, you could plant cover crops, let them grow a bit, dig them under, and plant more cover crops. If you did this for a year, you'd have wonderful soil you could fork turn. I have a friend here in Nevada who did that with her compacted sand, and she now has lovely loamy soil that is workable down about 18-20 inches. She also used compost around the cover crops. Just a thought. I'm thinking about using cover crops to loosen up my soil and add organics. Best of luck to you in whatever you do!

I have Celebration Bermuda so I am familiar with growing bermuda. If you fertilize, water , and mow properly that bermuda will crawl over and into everything.

Most likely the builder gave a six inch buffer to your flower bed to keep it from growing in there.

When was the last time it was fertilized and what did you use?

We moved in June 1st. I fertilized with 13-13-13 from Lowe's on June 5th or so. I haven't fertilize since then. I was going to fertilize with the same thing this weekend.

where exactly in Texas are you. the 13-13-13 is good for a vegetable garden but not bermuda

what do you mow with, how oftern, what height.
how often do you water and how much at one time

I'm in East Texas, Tyler to be exact.

Push Mower, once a week, 3 inches high. Water 3 times a week, and it's been raining like crazy.

I don't bag it.

LOL, reading here it seems I'm doing EVERYTHING wrong. They don't have a Lesco supplier in Tyler, you have to buy it at Home Depot.

Thing is, I have NO time to mow during the week. Weekends only. So how and what should I do to make my yard look great with weekend mowing only?

Dont' take what I say personally but I am just going to put it out there.
Google "Bermuda Bible Texasweed" It has great info of what to do throughout the year.
East Texas. Probably acidic soil. Is it clay, loam, or sand.

I'll be honest and say Bermuda is not a mow it high and once a week type of lawn. It is very labor intensive.

You can get your stuff at HD but you have to read the labels and not have the HD staff tell you what to put on it.
Best thing is a soil sample but I can tell buy your name that you probably want to take the cheapest route possible.

Water once a week for a long duration. You want those roots to grow down and not across.

Came back after the bermuda bible reading and we can fill in the blanks.
