Late Summer or Fall Weed Control

I have heard that applying a Weed and Feed or a product with Halts in late Summer or Fall can help with early Spring weed Problems. Scotts sells a product but I have read reviews that it burns your lawn. Any other product out there that can help prevent weeds in the Spring?? I had something for the first time this year in early Spring in my Kentucky Bluegrass that would not go away it turned yellow and matted and hung around. I raked most of it out but it looked dead and was but could not get rid of it with it's little feathery tops actually looked like a grass. But anyway still looking for a product to use late in the year

Well first of all, weed and feed products are not such a great idea. You would be better off using fertilizer separate from herbicides. That being said, a late summer application of a preemergent like Halts, or Dimension will prevent poa annua from germinating. Poa annua is a winter annual, so it germinates in the late summer/early fall when soil temps fall below 70 degrees F, lies dormant in winter, and produces seed in the spring. This late summer application will not affect spring/summer annuals. For that you need to do another application of a preemergent in early spring. If you are planning to seed turf you cannot use these products as they will also prevent your grass seed from germinating.

I typically do use a preemergent in the Spring. But I read using Halts or some other product in late Summer early Fall is the thing to do. I was just looking for different companies that had products I could use

Having read some other things, I think I have decided to not plant KBG until Sept. I grow KBG very well in other parts of the lawn with similar sunlight patterns. It might be a bit more than 3-4 hours a day, and some filtered sunlight outside of that. I don't want a different species on the other side of my driveway.... Interesting concept to sprout the weeds, then kill and plant. Will Roundup remain active after a week or so and stunt the germination of new KBG seed? Would I have to rake out the dead weeds first (wouldn't be that hard actually). Interesting concept. I was planning on tarp covering the loam now until Sept to keep wind borne seeds off, and keep erosion down. And to be honest, I am already worried about my water bill so I don't think I want to spend $$ watering weeds I will jsut rake out..... Thanks for the tips, I may try to post more pics in this thread of the project as it moves along....

Caryopteris holds off until August in my garden and attracts butterflies by the hundreds. Mine is planted between two Montauk Daisies (aka Nippon Daisies). The caryopteris is just winding down as the daisies take over. For anyone who's not grown this plant...it's wonderful! It's a sub-shrub (like lavender gaura, Russian sage, etc.) and grows to a 4'x4' globe with thick foliage/stems...almost like a succulent. I prune mine down twice/season and it is always covered with hundreds of 3-4" white daisies Labor Day through Halloween. Also, hardy hibiscus will bloom well into late September...early October here. Sedums have faded by mid-August but still I leave the flower heads standing because I think they're attractive in their own right. I rely heavily on berry producing shrubs, foliage, & ornamental grasses for late season color. By mid-September to early October...my perennials are winding down...and so is their gardener!

Some thoughts/tips that you can offer: - different types of grass have different requirements, folks might want to check out Walter Reeves's Lawn Calendars to find out what to do for their lawn: http://www.walterreeves.com/lawns/article.phtml?cat=6&id=353 - have fewer weeds next year by making sure that this year's weeds don't go to seed! A favorite rhyme of mine: "One year's seeding equals seven years of weeding" (because the seeds don't all germinate the same year). - when the leaves come down in the fall, save them for a compost pile or chop them up with your lawn mower and use them as mulch under your trees and shrubs. As the leaves break down, they act as free fertilizer for those plants. - fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs; use the hot summer to research the right plants so that you are ready to plant in the fall. Anna, You can grow many plants in the fall garden, but some of them do better from transplants because of the issues involved in getting some seed varieties to sprout in hot soil. Also, hot soil tends to crust over and it can be hard for seeds to break through that crust. (You can get around that sometimes by covering the seeds with finished compost instead of soil.) I've linked the OSU Fall Garden Planting Guide for you. In the charts at the end of it, you'll find info on each vegetable that can be grown in the fall garden, and useful info for each including planting dates, spacing, etc. With the planting dates, the further north you are, the more the earlier dates apply and the further south you are, then the later planting dates are better. With fall gardening, precise attention to recommended planting dates is very important because just a couple of weeks deviation can mean certain crops won't produce before cold temperatures arrive. Did you read my post? Using a preemergent in the late summer when soil temps are above 70 F is a good idea mainly to prevent poa annua germination. Lawn burn is usually caused by the fertilizer portion of weed and feed products, but those are generally post emergent herbicide/fertilizer combinations that need to remain on the lawn for a while without watering in. You should always water in fertilizer and fertilizer/preemergent combinations. There are several preemergents on the market you can buy that don't include fertilizer. Dimension, Barricade, Stonewall, Pendulum, Ronstar, etc. Here's a good site to decide what you want to use.

I plan to overseed my yard the first week of September, when can I apply the rest of the Dimension that I used at the beginning of the season. I guess I am asking, how many weeks do you have to wait after overseeding?

I don't think you can use Dimension this year if you are planning on overseeding. If you use it now, I am pretty sure it lasts for at least three months, so it will inhibit your seeds from becoming grass. If you do it after your new grass is growing the Dimension will probably cause all new growth to cease, and your grass will be stunted and at worst, could die. I am sure it has instructions on the bag when it will be safe, probably after the first three mowings, but I wouldn't use it anyway because the poa annua you are trying to stop will have already germinated.
