newsletter information for late summer/fall?

I'm on my subdivisions board as the landscape committee and I'm wondering about late summer or fall landscaping/gardening. I'm not a native to Georgia, so I'm not sure about how to treat the plants/grass/landscape with each season. I'm looking for information that I can add to our Aug/Sept/Oct newsletter. Thanks for any advice/tips.

Some thoughts/tips that you can offer:

- different types of grass have different requirements, folks might want to check out Walter Reeves's Lawn Calendars to find out what to do for their lawn: http://www.walterreeves.com/lawns/article.phtml?cat=6&id=353

- have fewer weeds next year by making sure that this year's weeds don't go to seed! A favorite rhyme of mine: "One year's seeding equals seven years of weeding" (because the seeds don't all germinate the same year).

- when the leaves come down in the fall, save them for a compost pile or chop them up with your lawn mower and use them as mulch under your trees and shrubs. As the leaves break down, they act as free fertilizer for those plants.

- fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs; use the hot summer to research the right plants so that you are ready to plant in the fall.

You might also mention the fact that you can deadhead or cut back some annuals and perennials and get a fall bloom period, you can do that with roses too.
You can give some info on seed saving. Late summer and fall are great times to collect seeds from zinnias, coneflowers and others, and these seeds can be used to trade or just sow in another area. You can also collect veg seeds or melon seeds, for example. Also there is a forum here called winter sowing and you might want to direct some folks to check out that forum and they might want to do winter sowing this year. They could be getting there containers ready in the fall.

I think you will be fine with lettuce, spinach, and carrots. I plan to sow carrots and lettuce this weekend. I just planted out transplants of broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage that I started from seed in early August. If you have the space, you could also buy transplants of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and a few other fall crops. They are usually available for sale this time of year. I would try to get the early varieties this late (that is usually what they have), but I just planted some 90 day types; it is hit or miss with late types. Sometimes I get them in December, but other times it gets too cold too early and I won't get them until February. They really like October and November here. They don't die in winter, but they do slow to a crawl in December and January.

As Michael correctly stated, many people confuse cercospora and even anthracnose with black spot. Both of those diseases tend to produce "black spots" on leaves and information on them is not as widely publicized as is the information for black spot. Both diseases tend to appear in summer. All that being said, in many parts of the US, true black spot can appear pretty much any time during the growing season depending on local weather conditions That is why it is important to establish a fungicide program for susceptible roses and STICK TO IT for the entire season. As for different races of black spot, as has already been ,mentioned, there are at least five known pathogenic races of the fungus. Chances are there are more. So a rose that is resistant to one race may not be resistant to one or more of the others. However, all the races are controlled by widely available fungicides. Roses - and plants in general - do not have the same immune system as is found in insects, birds, mammals, etc. In other words, specific plant individuals do not actually "develop" a resistance to a specific pathogen as they are exposed. - they either have the genetic resistance or they don't ( this is highly simplified, of course). In a practical sense, if your rose gets black spot, it won't become resistant to later infections - you will have to control the fungus.

My main flowerbed has many large clumps of Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldstrum' (or maybe it's R. hirta, whatever the common wildflower is) and they put on quite a show. My only complaint is that they tend to rest in between flushes of blooms - so there are long periods where I don't have any color. And the pattern of when they bloom or not bloom is totally up to the weather and is different every year. Mixed in with them is every color of Garden Phlox available and they bloom up til the first hard frost in my yard (which is usually November). I also have Obediant plant. In my bed it isn't much of a thug. I planted it last so it isn't winning the turf war with the phlox or black eyed susans. The bed endures long periods of dryness and only gets 4 hours of stong light in the late afternoon so that may be why it just sorta limps along and pops up here and there between all the tall bloomers. I grow a lot of Goldenrods and especially like 'Fireworks' which tends to bloom around mid September. Stokesias do well for me as long as they are out in front of everything else. They tend to bloom now and then rest and rebloom in Sept or Oct. I really like using baby palms (Sabal minor) as foliage accents mixed in with all the bloomers. Once they get tall they tend to dominate everything - but with my lack of strong sunlight that takes forever. You don't really see the 'fan' shape of the leaves just long pokey spikes sticking up and through the clouds of blooms. I know, most folks would want the palms front and center but I like them this way. I have two perennial mums and I don't know either of their names. One is a pale apricot, sorta wild flower looking and very stunning with the right shades of yellow or oranges around it. The other is like stubby white daisies and it blooms way late in the year - like after first frost and on til Christmas if the weather stays mild in the daytime.

Hey girl, just had to come over here again and get my fix of harmony. My mental health is so thirsty! Thank you for that and thank you for the acknowledgement. No bad feelings allowed! I know you are there! :) I've been working on an alledged animal abuse case for a few days or rather I will just say more just being a mom to those working on the alledged animal abuse case. Being Mother Theresa is so draining! Lol! I think all is well with the animal in question but boy, the ruckus that resulted! Good thing I'm a tough old bird! :) I see that you are getting a bit of weather down there. We are through the cold part now and all is warming up again nicely. One morning it was -50C here with the windchill! All my little feathered and furred friends have been sticking really close to the house for food and warmth. I guess they know where to go for some TLC! :) I sure hope your mom and dad are doing ok (and the kitties and kiddies, young and old). I became a great aunt for the 10th time this morning at 6am London time. I think they are naming this little baby girl after my mom who passed when I was very young. And I ramble......cause I really needed a breather from the job.....:) Can't wait for spring! Building blankies and starting seeds will keep me busy till then. Keep the pics coming Celeste! I knew I could count on you guys. I had checked with a local garden center and home depot and they were not very friendly and didn't really have any advice. I went when I knew they would not be busy too. Thanks again!!! Still looking for more, and off to go check out the links!

If you are interested in knowing more about vegetable gardening, some information is in the Oakhurst Community Garden newsletter. It will tell you what crops they have been planting, and that is a help for the gardener.

The Cobb County Extension offices has articles on Hot topics in Urban Agriculture that offer up Monthly tips...
Could be good fodder for your newsletter if you're near the Atlanta area.
