Fall/late summer gardening?

My vegetable garden has been fallow for four years. After years I got tired of fighting the weeds and said I wouldn't do it again until I could have raised beds. After all this time, I've finally found the materials needed. I plan on putting in 8 4X4 raised beds and doing the whole square foot thing. Here's my question:

Provided that I can get the beds done by the end of June, what can I plant for fall? I hate to start seeds now, not knowing if something will happen to prevent me from getting them finished, so I'd prefer to sow directly...I guess I could start a few, it's not like I don't have seeds, media, and sun!

You can grow many plants in the fall garden, but some of them do better from transplants because of the issues involved in getting some seed varieties to sprout in hot soil. Also, hot soil tends to crust over and it can be hard for seeds to break through that crust. (You can get around that sometimes by covering the seeds with finished compost instead of soil.)

I've linked the OSU Fall Garden Planting Guide for you. In the charts at the end of it, you'll find info on each vegetable that can be grown in the fall garden, and useful info for each including planting dates, spacing, etc.

With the planting dates, the further north you are, the more the earlier dates apply and the further south you are, then the later planting dates are better. With fall gardening, precise attention to recommended planting dates is very important because just a couple of weeks deviation can mean certain crops won't produce before cold temperatures arrive.

Yes, the lack of sun past August will decrease your fall bloom. Unless your fall flush occurs in August anyway. Here, fall bloom starts in September, from buds that formed at the very end of August at the earliest. I have a friend with roses in the same kind of situation you describe, and she gets no fall blooms. Here there is no such thing as a shade tolerant rose. We do not get enough sun for any rose to do well with less than full sun. You do not say where you are so I can't judge what kind of climate you're in, except northern latitude judging from zone 4! But - a cloudy north, or a sunny north? We're a very cloudy north. You may not be. But go ahead and experiment! All we can do is tell you what we think might happen. We puny humans are often wrong when it comes to guessing what Mother Nature will do.

My choice and favorite choice is freesia. I plant them in late Fall for bloom in early Spring, then have an alternate set that I plant in Spring for early Summer to late Summer bloom while the leaves on the previous set set out to dry. I plant them in planters on my porch and deck and not in the yard because they are so highly fragrant that I would otherwise be on my hands and knees in the grassy yard just to take in their beauty and fragrance. LOL I have a rose cottage garden and as much as I love roses, freesia is right there with hyacinth among my most favorite of scents not to mention looks! Freesia releases a burst rather than remain fragrant like roses. I pluck the flowers and put them in tiny bottles of water next to my reading area and living room, just to be able to take in the scent. Here is a link that might be useful:

I'm going to direct sow a number of plants from seed myself this fall. Last year I grew 2 different packs of cosmos and I seriously think every single seed sprouted! Very easy to grow and very tall! Like Lorana said, hollyhocks and many others are best planted in the fall (at least for areas with mild winters). I have tried to plant seeds at both fall and spring and find that they do much much better when planted in the fall. I would not heavily mulch either as it seems to smother out the seedlings. We don't get snow here so I do gently water them from time to time, and any that I sow in spring I keep moist. This year I plan on direct sowing poppies, hollyhocks, zinnias,larkspur, corn flowers, snapdragons, cleome, violas and balsam. Good luck and hope this helps! Meghan

Some thoughts/tips that you can offer: - different types of grass have different requirements, folks might want to check out Walter Reeves's Lawn Calendars to find out what to do for their lawn: http://www.walterreeves.com/lawns/article.phtml?cat=6&id=353 - have fewer weeds next year by making sure that this year's weeds don't go to seed! A favorite rhyme of mine: "One year's seeding equals seven years of weeding" (because the seeds don't all germinate the same year). - when the leaves come down in the fall, save them for a compost pile or chop them up with your lawn mower and use them as mulch under your trees and shrubs. As the leaves break down, they act as free fertilizer for those plants. - fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs; use the hot summer to research the right plants so that you are ready to plant in the fall.
