Hose Storage - Reel Carrier

Any recommendations? I have a plastic Suncast carrier you manually wind up..but the handle broke and it leaks. Claims to have had a lifetime warranty when purchased years ago. Probably futile trying to collect on that.

Was in Lowes, and saw a $99 metal Ames one which looked sturdy. And then a "touch and go" by Suncast...supposedly it automatically rewinds using a "water motor." Are these scams? Do you even recommend these things, do they all leak?

On a small scale a powered hose reel has tempted me. The hand crank stuff is more trouble than just looping the hose over a wall hanger. Although a wall hanger is not always possible because of location. The trouble with hose reels is that you still have to un-reel the hose just to do anything. Usually when I go pulling on the hose the reel falls over and I get frustrated. That being said, if I didn't have 600 ft of hose like I now use, I think I would buy the one with the water motor and try it. Keep the receipt though for possible returns if it's not worth it.

I have this one (link below) and LOVE IT!! It is the best one I have ever had. I use a 150 ft hose and it winds up perfectly. You don't have to struggle with the hose like many reels. Mine doesn't leak either which was always a problem with the plastic ones. I have never had it fall over but suppose it would if you pulled your hose from the side. You know you have garden "issues" when you brag about your hose reel to people! :)

Gee, IMO, uncoupling the hoses and then dragging them around would be even MORE work! I'd rather just put a little more oomph into pulling them all together. But then again, I guess I cheat a bit. I pull the hoses out, drag them where I need them, and just leave them wherever I finish. Why put it back if I only have to drag it out again? Sometimes it does get pulled back and coiled by whoever is mowing the lawn, but then I just pull it out again and leave it. I do have to pull it from one area to the other, but all my gardening areas are far from the house, so I never drag the hose back to the house area; I just leave it near the last bed I was watering. I just make sure to check that no connections are laying in the driveway. DH once drove over a connnection and ruined two hoses in one instant. Dee

Ooooh, I hate dealing with the hose!!!! I bought a wind-up one something like 12 years ago that is a small self-contained unit that I can carry (not a big wheeled contraption). I love that thing because it's portable, but have had the leaking problems. DH patched it over the years and it has held up well outside of that. I have never seen another one like this, so I won't toss it. I've tried two different models of flat hoses - waste of money. The cloth models constantly spring leaks because the cloth is easily punctured (especially around thorny rosebushes!), they don't wind up as easily as the ads make you believe, and the plastic model I had had terrible water pressure. I had sprinklers installed at my other house, but when I moved here I didn't want to spend the money because I didn't plan on living here this long - what's that old quote - "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans". Yep.... So I'm still here, dragging the $#!@ hose, and swearing up and down that I am getting sprinklers at my next house if it's the last think I do! Bloody right!!!!

I use the one that is water powered. I got it as a gift from friends. They are not cheap and I never would have purchased it myself at that time. I have used it for several years now and I love it. I wouldn't want to be without it. I guess there is one on the same order, it's battery operated. Don't bother with the ones that you have to crank to roll up the hose, unless you are very strong and want to burn up a lot of energy! Hope this helps. Nancy VB

I have hose troubles too. I have had really bad luck with every hose I have bought from OSH recently. The regular hoses kink horribly. The "Kink-free" hoses sprout leaks in them after just a few months. They are also stiff and hard to handle. For storage, I have one of those boxes where you turn the handle and the hose reels itself in. I also use a nozzle on the end of the hose where you can turn the nozzle to shut off the water. I think the water must build up pressure in the hose when I turn the nozzle to 'off.' Maybe that is stressing the hose fabric too much, so it develops leaks? (And it is not like we have good water pressure either). I'm taking the hose I have now back to OSH because it developed leaks after only 3 or 4 months. It is supposed to have a lifetime guarantee, so I want my money back OSH!

I have 3 different metal ones, they all work well. If you need to move the thing make sure it has 4 wheels.

but a bit on the pricey side - i highly recommend

I have had a variety of hose caddies over the 40 years I have been gardening. The best one by far, is the last one I bought. It is a rapidreel! I bought the quad wheel kit and it works great. It will last the rest of my life!
