Perlite is a substrate used to improve drainage and keeps the soil from compacting as quickly as it would without. Mg alone is too water retentive. Your buckets may have good drainage but the soil used for containers also needs to drain well. It's really too late this year to do anything about the soil but you will know next time. Get a water soluble fertilizer with the numbers 10-10-10 or something similar and follow the mixing directions. Then you can either water with this solution every 4-6 weeks or mix that equally with 3 more gallons of water and water with that every time you water.

auteck, I do apologize if you thought I was referring to your post. I was answering the OP, but I certainly need to be more careful with my posts. Sorry. Phillip, The first picture looks like a burned out lawn to me. You didn't say how much you have been watering. A mild spring fertilizer would have been nice, but not necessary and certainly not a cause of your problem. I did not see anything in the cultivars you listed that would indicate a problem. Looks like a nice shade mixture. auteck may have the answer. I'm afraid with tall fescue that what is dead is dead and you'll need to reseed this fall. I would recommend a soil test and investigation of the soil down to about 8 inches. Can you grab a hand full of turf and pull it up or is it firmly rooted?

Around here they put down straw over new seed to hold in moisture and assist the germination. I think the dead grass will serve the same purpose and as BPgreen says decompose over time.
