Suumer fertilization of new lawn??

As I have posted previously, I planted my new lawn in may, fertilized June 1 and have mowed twice now. The lawn is coming n pretty well.

The retailer of the seed (Summit Seed) advised that I fertilize again with starter fertilizer on July 1 and August 1. Two trusted posters on this forum advised against summer fertilization all together because you dont want to be encouraging summer top growth.

Here's my question - given the limited root system of my new lawn, is there a fertilizer I can put down that will contiue to feed the root system without stimulating top growth?

The reason I ask is that it seems that the new lawn could not have saved up much in terms of carbs to get it through the summer. And I would hate for it to "go hungry" waiting for the fall feedings. If that is the wrong way to look at this, feel free to say so. Thanks in advance.
