Lesco Fertilizers for Bermuda Lawn.. is 46-0-0 OK?

We live in Raleigh NC metro and just have a new lawn seeded with Bermuda 2 month ago. It looks great right now - even we have days with above 90 degree for more 2 weeks and it will continue. Now time to for fertilizers.

I see lots of people recommend lesco 39-0-0 Nitrogen, but I called 3 Lesco stores nearby they all ran out of stock. One store said they have 46-0-0. But we dont know if it is slow-released.. Can we use this ?

Yes, you can use 46-0-0 at the 1 pound per 1,000 per application.

46% of that bag is actual nitrogen, or 23 pounds of that 50 lbs bag.

You need to fertilize every 30 days, mow every other day at 1 inch or less with a reel mower, and 1 inch or water or more per week in full sun - that's how you get a good looking bermuda with fewer weeds.

And you thought Fescue was high maintenence...

Wait, don't forget to roundup the edges on the flower beds to prevent bermuda from taking over.

If thats the quick release nitrogen, you need to water it in immediately after application. Else you risk burning your lawn.

Well, Goren, I'm a proponnent of feeding the soil, not just the plant, which seems to be what you are suggesting as the best path. However, when you suggest feeding "just nitrogen" is somehow not appropriate or best at times, I think you put form over substance. Several very reputable studies suggest a last application of quick release nitrogen applications (organice or chemical) does in fact help the thing most lawn owners are trying primarily to foster to best result - turf grass. Arguing just applying nitrogen, to something that depends primarily on nitrogen, (cool season turf grass) is like saying giving "just water" is somehow bad for people. Or like saying mother's breast milk isn't the best food for a newborn. Sometimes one food is best. Cool season grasses need a certain amount of nitrogen, and a last fall feeding with 1 and quarter pounds of quick release nitrogen per thousand seems to help cool season grasses make it through the winter better and does it, as far as I can tell, without hurting the overall health of the microbes and soil. Your advise that adding a balanced fertilizer when the grass has already gone dormant is not supported by any study I've seen. Once you get to the late season fertilizer application, there is no reason to believe the other elements are beneficial to either the plant in winter or the soil next spring in the usual setting. Usually adding a balanced fertilizer is a fairly basic approach and good advice. However, in the limited instance discussed on this thread, adding elements beside nitrogen are likely nothing but wasteful and maybe even adding to the pollution problem from runoff chemicals. There is a time for one well timed, proper rate of quick release nitrogen, and for cool season grasses in cold areas of the country, right after the first hard freeze causes the grass topgrowth to stop is the proper time and "food".

Hey TW thanks for the reply. I went ahead and put the 46-0-0 yesterday and water in immediately. An hour later it started raining and we have gotten about 4 inches of since then. I have seed heads in my yard a day after i cut it at 3/4". Makes the yard look bad. I water deeply and infrequently. Took two soil sample and the ph was 6.4 in one spot and 6.8 in the other. Talked to a few people and they said the most likely cause for the seedheads is low fertilization. Thats why i hit it with the 46-0-0. Your thoughts?

Try this. Go to Lesco's spreader settings tool and select your product. It will give you more spreader settings. Your's isn't listed so then go to Greenview's spreader settings tool which has a lot more options in terms of spreaders. Then pick a Greenview product and select your spreader, which is listed on the greenview page. Note the spreader setting. Then go through the list of spreaders from the Lesco page and input them on the greenview tool. Find the one that has the same number that you got using the greenview tool, then go back to the lesco tool and use the spreader setting that is indicated for the other spreader. Boy that sounds confusing. I managed to find it on the first try so let me tell you exactly what I did. Went to Lesco and selected 000777 and got the list of spreader settings. Then went to Greenview and picked a random product with similar formulation and the SCott's Standard Spreader. It came back with a setting of 4 1/2 for your spreader. Went back to Lesco and saw they had a spreader setting for the Scott's speedy green 2000 so I went back to Greenview and resubmitted the form only changing the spreader to the speedy green 2000 and got a setting of 4 1/2, which was the same that your spreader had for the same greenview product. Go back to lesco and see that the 2000 setting is 6 which I would assume is the same for your spreader. You should go through the greenview page and compare spreader settings between the 2000 and standard just to verify that they use the same spreader settings across different products. A couple of things came to mind when I saw this board. First, Tall Fescue does remain green year round, but it isn't actively growing year round. The Nitrogen is used by the plant for chlorophyll, protein production, etc., but is only going to be absorbed during times of active growth when soil temperatures are 60-75 degrees. So, applying high Nitrogen fertilizer when the ground is frozen won't help the turf. Second, 46-0-0 urea is usually mixed into a solution and sprayed. For example, I will be mixing it with 0-0-62 and a pre-emergent this Spring. This allows me to deliver a balanced fertilization and a pre-emergent at the same time. The balance in Spring is usually a 2-1 ratio of Nitrogen to Potash delivering 1# of N and 1/2# of K. Also, try to find a slow-release mix as you don't want your Nitrogen level fluxuating dramatically between applications. I recommend going with a lower Nitrogen count, such as 16-0-8 w/minors (2-1 ratio and usually 30% slow release). Over Nitrogen use actually depletes the carbohydrate reserves in the plant as the growth surges and it struggles to keep up. A steady growth with a good balance of nutrients will give you better color and more importantly, lasting color. I put a link to a picture of a Tall Fescue lawn I started last Spring. The neighbor had a service that was aggressive in Spring with a lot of N, while my service focuses on nutrient balance and soil structure. The picture is from late June and the lawn does not have an irrigation system. The homeowner just figured we were getting more rain than usual; in actuality we had less during that Spring and Summer than we had since the 2007 drought. in Atlanta. That would be fine to apply as long as its Slow release. If not I would apply only 1/2-lb N per 1000sqft every 30 days, which equals 1lb per 1000sqft.

46-0-0 is fast release, very fast release. It can be used with caution on dry grass and watered in immediately. Applu only at 2 pounds of product per 1000/ft2

Seems I need to call more stores to get those slow released 'coz I don't wanna burn my lovely lawn without enough water in with those fast release..

I have the same problem here in East GA, can't find the 39-0-0. With the 46-0-0, how much "watering in" is needed? Also I have a scotts accugreen drop spreader, any idea what setting to use? Thanks

Its not how much the product is "watered in" its how soon. Listen to TW "Water in immediately"

I would say run your irrigation as normal following the fertilizer application.

Geez...we can't even get 46-0-0 here thanks to terrorists, so I'm told. I prefer the 39-0-0 anyway. Thanks TW!

You should the 46-0-0 is urea, not ammonia nitrate.

This is urea. Dissolve it in water and spray it on. You only need 0.1 to 0.2 lb N/1000 sf! Sorry, you will need to do the math to get this right. Yes, by foliar application, your grass will require a lot less. This will save you some money.

Add some ferrous sulphate and you're off to the races with a dark green lawn.
