Question on urea 46-0-0

First off, I have never used this stuff. I found a place that sells it for $25 for a 50 pound bag. Is that a good or average price?

I plan on using this in mid to late fall to lessen the risk if smoking my lawn......

What setting do I use? I have a Scotts Lawn Pro rotary spreader.

You need to give more info. Where are you and what kind of turf do you have? I have only ever used 46-0-0 on Bermuda grass. Now I prefer a fert with a portion of slow release N.

Hi Chiefsfan, I'm a fan and user of 46-0-0. That's about what I pay around here.

The urea is great as your last feeding of the year when top growth has stopped. Because the nitrogen is quick release and even though top growth has stopped, the roots are still active until frost reaches the depths and the nitrogen is stored as carbohydrates until spring. Then, just allow mother nature to green your lawn naturally come spring.

Apply at a rate of 2 to 3Lbs per 1000 sq. ft. and irrigate.

Well, Goren, I'm a proponnent of feeding the soil, not just the plant, which seems to be what you are suggesting as the best path. However, when you suggest feeding "just nitrogen" is somehow not appropriate or best at times, I think you put form over substance. Several very reputable studies suggest a last application of quick release nitrogen applications (organice or chemical) does in fact help the thing most lawn owners are trying primarily to foster to best result - turf grass. Arguing just applying nitrogen, to something that depends primarily on nitrogen, (cool season turf grass) is like saying giving "just water" is somehow bad for people. Or like saying mother's breast milk isn't the best food for a newborn. Sometimes one food is best. Cool season grasses need a certain amount of nitrogen, and a last fall feeding with 1 and quarter pounds of quick release nitrogen per thousand seems to help cool season grasses make it through the winter better and does it, as far as I can tell, without hurting the overall health of the microbes and soil. Your advise that adding a balanced fertilizer when the grass has already gone dormant is not supported by any study I've seen. Once you get to the late season fertilizer application, there is no reason to believe the other elements are beneficial to either the plant in winter or the soil next spring in the usual setting. Usually adding a balanced fertilizer is a fairly basic approach and good advice. However, in the limited instance discussed on this thread, adding elements beside nitrogen are likely nothing but wasteful and maybe even adding to the pollution problem from runoff chemicals. There is a time for one well timed, proper rate of quick release nitrogen, and for cool season grasses in cold areas of the country, right after the first hard freeze causes the grass topgrowth to stop is the proper time and "food".

2.17 pounds of urea over 1,000 square feet gives 1 pound of nitrogen. In this case, just divide 100/46 = 2.17 and that's the answer. 1/0.46 will give the same number (and may be easier to understand--1 pound of N divided by 46% nitrogen = 2.17 pounds to deliver 1 pound N).

A couple of things came to mind when I saw this board. First, Tall Fescue does remain green year round, but it isn't actively growing year round. The Nitrogen is used by the plant for chlorophyll, protein production, etc., but is only going to be absorbed during times of active growth when soil temperatures are 60-75 degrees. So, applying high Nitrogen fertilizer when the ground is frozen won't help the turf. Second, 46-0-0 urea is usually mixed into a solution and sprayed. For example, I will be mixing it with 0-0-62 and a pre-emergent this Spring. This allows me to deliver a balanced fertilization and a pre-emergent at the same time. The balance in Spring is usually a 2-1 ratio of Nitrogen to Potash delivering 1# of N and 1/2# of K. Also, try to find a slow-release mix as you don't want your Nitrogen level fluxuating dramatically between applications. I recommend going with a lower Nitrogen count, such as 16-0-8 w/minors (2-1 ratio and usually 30% slow release). Over Nitrogen use actually depletes the carbohydrate reserves in the plant as the growth surges and it struggles to keep up. A steady growth with a good balance of nutrients will give you better color and more importantly, lasting color. I put a link to a picture of a Tall Fescue lawn I started last Spring. The neighbor had a service that was aggressive in Spring with a lot of N, while my service focuses on nutrient balance and soil structure. The picture is from late June and the lawn does not have an irrigation system. The homeowner just figured we were getting more rain than usual; in actuality we had less during that Spring and Summer than we had since the 2007 drought. in Atlanta. OK! Nitrogen should be used with caution. Too much of it will do more harm than good. Lets do a comparative math. 46% of what is in the bag is pure Nitrogen. Say, you take two ounces and add two ounces of water to it, you will have, roughllt a 23-0-0 liquid fertilizer. I will then use about two TBLSP of that solution per gallon of water. This should fairy compare to liquid tertilizers sold in the bottle. Avoid foliar feeding. I alway use fertilizers diluted to about 1/3 of the recommended and use it more frequently instead. This way I avoid getting too much foliage, the excess is not leached down and wasted. cyrus

Thanks guys, I saw that yesterday and a few ideas ran through my head. LOL! I read up on that Purdue site for my last feeding.But that Greenview is tempting, expensive though.

Be very careful with it as it is a fast release formula. Besure the grass is bone dry, and apply at a rate where it takes two passes. You only want 2-pounds of product per 1000/ft2. Water immediately after application

If the grass is even slightly wet or damp from morning dew and there is any delay in watering it in, it will burn the grass where the granules stuck to a wet blades.

IMHO, it's marketing hype. Greenview is best known for IBDU nitrogen.

50Lb bags usually under $30 - get your urea there too.

Thanks! I'll go check out John Deere/Lesco. I have fescue mainly. This is my first year in trying out a new fertilizer schedule.
That bermuda was a pain in the ...

I still deal with some residual bermuda but it is finally gone!

Just a small addition.

Texas weed is the bermuda king. I think his advice on 2lbs per 1000 probably is directed for that grass. For those using urea as an end of season fertilizer on cool season grasses, the recommendation is usually a pound to a pound and a quarter per thousand.

It is powerful stuff and is easy to over apply.

Partially correct, my POV was directed at the generic application of 1-pound of nitrogen. However the OP stated somewhere in this thread he had or has some Bermuda in the lawn. If he applies 46-0-0 this time of year, if there is any trace of Bermuda around, it will come back with vengeance. I guarantee it.

Great point texas-weed. I may have some bermuda left. Too early to see if it is rearing its head yet.
I took out a few spots with Round Up last summer. It's a survivor that is for sure!
So I will NOT feed my lawn with that till late fall if I do.
