Penncross Creeping Bentgrass Renovation Update

Here are some pictures from this afternoon after I mowed at 1/2". Still a few snow mold thin areas, but I suspect they should be filled in within a few weeks! Then I should I have a lush carpet for the rest of summer and fall! I am VERY happy with this grass.

Look at the crappy neighbors yard I have to look at. Dandelions and creeping charlie everywhere. It was 7" high a few days ago and he scalped it down to about 2". LOL.

Wow, that is looking really awesome! When you first posted your photos a few months ago with all of that snow damage I have to admit that I thought most of it was lost, so I kept my mouth shut. Shows you what I know...

That is one fine looking lawn, especially for so early in the season. Congratulations!

Wxman81, your posting got me outside this morning! I was going to dormant seed in December, but the winter snows came before I had a chance to spot seed some poorly covered KGB areas. I did a KGB elite renovation last year. One side of my house has a strip of about 45 x 10 that KGB wouldn't grow in due to the shade of the house. This morning I went outside with my hand seeder and threw down some "shade" seed on this area. I wish I had done this yesterday to get it down before the snow, but I'm hoping that my house will block the wind. I walked on it, which should help hold some seed, but even if we get 40% of these little seeds sprouting it's a win! I'm all ready with my Tupersan to spray the areas I'm seeding to prevent crabgrass. It's getting exciting, even through I'm looking outside to at least a 4-6" snow cover. Yeah, there's some other grass in there like you said. I didn't want to chemicalize the whole lawn with roundup. I'll let bentgrass win the war on its own. The tall fescue won't like being mowed at 1" so the bent will eventually win. And, yeah I did plant it early July. The top half by the house was done July 2, and the bottom half by the sidewalk was done July 6. At the top of this thread I posted pics taken on July 14. You can see a lot of bare dirt in those pics. Its filled in nicely, especially for a July planting. Whoever says you can't plant a cool season grass in summer has to be wrong ;). In two weeks I'm having 10 yards of topsoil delivered and I'm doing the same to the backyard. Cut at 1", vigorous dethatch with a power dethatcher, put down 1/2" to 1" of topsoil and seed at 2-3 lbs per 1000 sq ft. Now I have to convince my dear condo neighbor (I live in a side x side condo) to do his front yard the same.

Oh Man! I live in SE Michigan and while it's too late this year, you have me all fired up about doing a glysophate nuke on my KBG next spring and putting down some bentgrass. Also, I love your part of the country. Have had the privilege to play Blackwolf Run (both courses), but haven't made it back to do Whistling Straits. I do have that on my bucket list though. Not sure you knew about, or even need this yet, but there is a special herbicide (trimec flavor) just for bentgrass. All that time and money you've put into your lawn, no sense burning it up with some generic weed killer. I'll put the link down below for you. Plus I noticed all kinds of bentgrass seed, in various small poundages. I noticed that there are not too many places to buy bentgrass seed in small quantities. Do you think that means bentgrass for residences are not that popular? I would think with all the golfing fools out there that they would entertain the idea of a bentgrass lawn. Interesting. Looks great. I wish my lawn was recovering from my snow mold that well but then again, I have kbg/rye/fescue.

What's wrong with dandelions? I'm loaded with them right now. Gotta spray again to do what I can to keep the lawn looking decent until Fall. My neighbor on the other hand, he's the reason why I have so many dandelions.

wxman, awesome job, man! That's indeed a great looking lawn... Your next door neighbor sounds just like my next door neighbor... I spray the weeds and fertilize their area so it does not affect my lawn.

I"m growing some A-4 bentgrass as an experiment, but I have not had the results you have. I seeded on the May 1st, and just 2 days ago a saw the first few seedlings...? I thought bentgrass was as fast a ryegrass as far as germination and stablishment?

Anyway, keep those pictures coming as the season progresses.

What's very interesting to me is how fast your bentgrass lawn went from dead looking/dormant to golf course appearance! My neighbor's Zoysia which started coming out of dormancy in late March, still coming out of dormincy TODAY.

It should start germinating within five days or so. What are the temperatures down there right now? I seeded my bent on Aug 4, 2007 and daytime temperatures were 75-85 and night time temperatures were 55-65. Here is what it looked like five days after planting:

I was thinking about overseeding the penncross with declaration this fall but I'm wondering if I'll be able to even get any germination in that dense turf. I also wonder how the lawn is going to like 85-95 temperatures and high humidity in July. What is the organic stuff that gets rid of disease? I'm not really wanting to spray fungicide if I don't have to.

Cornmeal is what you are thinking is the organic fungicide. Apparently cracked corn (more widely available) works as well, though slower, but I'm not sure you could use that on that low mowed stand. Maybe others can chime in?

Corn meal would be ideal for fungal control. You will have to hand spread it as it doesn't work with the spreader. Use push broom to get corn meal to filter down to the ground between grass blades.

Dropped another pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft today. I'm now up to 4 lbs per 1000 sq ft for the year!!
