Need some grass planting advise...failed once

Hey Guys, would like some help.

I waited all winter to plant grass in the back yard as was excited. I waited till middle of april when the nights dont drop below 60 here in phoenix.

I raked the backyard for rocks, used a metal rake and loosened up the dirt, roughly 3-4 inches down. Used scotts sead speader and spread out scotts seed and also spreaded fertilizer seed. After that raked the dirt again mixing the seeds somewhat below the dirt.

First two weeks i watered before sun came out, once in middle of day and then once sun went down. Really nothing happened, just small weeds. One month later, i have weeds everywhere and random spots of grass, I attached a link to a picture of the sad yard.

Im thinking its too late to try to plant seed again so is planting sod my only option? My only concern is if i do sod, what about all the exsisting seed and fresh grass growing in random spots?

Thanks for the input!

Chris
