What is this grassy weed?

I have these patches of tufty/clumpy grass in my yard. They are fairly shallow rooted. They start dying out in late May/early June. It start turining yellow near the root. Not sure if it's a grass or a weed. I cannot figure out what this stuff is, but I would love to get rid of it. It is choking out my good grass.

Sounds like annual bluegrass.
The only way to get rid of it is to prevent it or wait for it to die in the heat.
Apply preemergent in the fall. This will prevent germination and its emergence in the spring.

It might have a common name of foxtail but a lot of plants go by that name. I just came in from pulling a bunch of it out of my St Augustine lawn. If you can find the center of the plant, it really comes out easy with a Weed Hound tool. My St Aug just got 4 inches of rain this week and made the centers hard to find, so I did a lot of hand pulling.

I am no expert but it looks like poa. If it is, I don't know of any good way to kill it post emergence. I have heard of ways which you can find by searching on here or google but I have never personally tried any. It looks like you are in Jersey so it may get hot enough to naturally kill it off. The best way to control it is by putting down a pre-emergent in the fall and spring. I have/had poa in my bermuda lawn. Between my lawn getting thick and the heat, it eventually died off. I am looking forward to using either Dimension or Pre-M from Lesco and being poa free next year. Good luck!!

Sounds like a weed & feed or the clover killer is needed. Go back and overseed the patches.
