Help Needed For New Lawn Plan

I need some advice on planting a brand new lawn. I know fall is the best time to seed, but we really can't go all summer with just a dirt yard (brand new house).

I live in eastern Iowa and we intend to seed about 1-1.5 acres of our lot. The lot has relatively high clay-content soil. I'm not sure how high, but it is not "black dirt". I have not had the soil tested yet because the rough and finish grading has not yet been done. This is former pasture land, and some grasses do grow on the undisturbed areas. There also isn't any shade near the house, but the house faces east-ish so the front does see some shade in late afternoon. Finally, I'm not opposed to maintenance, but I'm not going to make it a career. I like the lawn to look nice, but not necessarily "showcase". It's doubtful that I'll be one to water in the summer with 1.5 acres to cover and a shared well.

Around here, KBG is the lawn of choice and we really enjoy the slender blade look. The local farm supply store is the only place I've found that I can get a bulk amount of seed at a decent price. They carry KenBlue KBG straight or in mixes (sunny, shady, etc).

So here are my questions:

- Will I be able to grow grass in this soil? I have been surprised by the "looseness" of the top layers. Some people around here say it should be Ok. Considering the cost to bring in matierals to mix in, I think it's going to be my only choice.

- Should I use straight KBG seed, or go for a mix? The mix makes me nervous because in my last yard, I had clumps of grass that didn't seem to match the rest of the yard (http://josh.breittechnologies.com/blogfiles/0000/00/02/P1020831.JPG). If a mix is suggested, any suggestions on the amounts to mix and the type (rygrass, creeping red fescue)?

- Any tips for seeding a hill? I'ts not real steep, but you can sled down it in the winter.

Any other tips you can think of would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh
