Lawn care newbie--I'm clueless

hammertoes

Hey everyone. I just bought my first house, and being that the house was empty for three years before I moved in, the lawn is just a wreck. The owner had someone cutting it, but that's about it. I have bare dirt patches here and there, and some patches of moss growing instead of grass.

I'm completely new to lawn care and have no idea what I'm doing. I haven't the slightest idea what type of grass I have. I plan on getting the lawn aerated, but beyond that I'm not sure what I should do next. I was thinking of seeding, but do I only seed the bare patches or the whole lawn? Does it matter if I don't use the same type of seed as the grass I have now? I'm assuming that I should also fertilize, but what type do I use? I've heard good things about some product called RINGER.

Sorry for all the questions. Anyone have any ideas?
