another bird bath/water dish with crystals

This time I used an old tin enamelware plate and bowl. I drilled holes for the crystals to hang on and I used GE silicone glue to attach the bowl to the plate.

It is mounted on a copper pipe.

I like this birdbath too. The chipped enamel makes me think it would look pretty amidst some of the old washtubs and metal pail planters that others have posted.

Oh, I don't blame you, Katkin. Letting your animals trash someone else's yard is the height of rudeness! I walk my dog all over the neighborhood, but never without a plastic bag, in case he goes somewhere. I even pick it up from the public easement. Who wants to step in it? I use a scooper in my own backyard, too. No surprises for me early in the morning, thanks! I have four cats who are all indoor animals. The average life expectancy of an outdoor cat is two years! TWO. They SHOULD live between 15 and 20, easily. For their own safety, they belong inside. My animals are MY responsibility, just like my children were, and they have to respect my neighbors. Oh, yeah...the garden junk forum would have some good ideas on birdbaths, I'll bet! I keep forgetting to check them out regularly. They are so creative! I almost always see SOMETHING I like. Marcia

You shouldn't put anything in the bird bath that could affect birds, who bathe AND drink the water. Having clean feathers is imperative to their well-being. The water in birds baths should be clean. If you do a quick rinse of the vessel with your hose and then refill it, say...every 2 or 3 days, you'll never have adult mosquitoes emerging from your bird bath again. It takes about a week for a newly deposited egg to emerge as an adult. If the water has been in their long enough to hatch crops of mosquitoes, it's dirty and unsafe for the birds. If you do keep the water clean and are still worried about mosquitoes, there's a nifty little device you can use in your bird baths that keeps the water vibrated (mosquitoes HAVE to have calm water). I swear that I am the worlds largest collector of bird baths. It's embarrassing how many I have. But hey! Some people collect lawn gnomes. Everyone here is right - any shallow dish can be a bird bath. Some of mine are serving platters, others are terra-cotta pot bottoms. I'm big on dishes of water set about the garden. The two most important features in a bath IMO are shallow and a textured bottom. A bath with a slick, glazed surface birds won't get in. They'll drink from the sides but not get in it. Some people use pebbles or rocks to compensate for this but that's harder to clean. My latest must-haves are small cast stone baths. You can see some here Small Cast Stone Cement Bird Baths. I have about four of them now, set beside shrubs about my garden and am crazy about them. Taller styles are here: Tall Cast Stone Cement Bird Baths but it's the little guys I love. I have had no problems with anything knocking them down. Their biggest drawback is you can't use them in winter, but the reinforced cement makes them stronger than regular cement. The bottoms are rough, birds love them, and you just scrub them out with a brush and some plain dish soap, use the hose. People ask me about them all the time and where I got them, that sort of thing. They come in lots of color choices which is nice!

I'm no expert in electrical matters, but I think that your 250 watt heater is probably sized for fairly large troughs, maybe livestock water pans. That said, it should cycle on and off only enough to heat up whatever volume of water you give it. If the volume is small, like a small birdbath, it would only be drawing power for a short time. It might heat up the water a little faster than a lower watt heater but I doubt that it would waste electricity since the amount of electricity used would depend on the volume of water, not the wattage. Very pretty birdbath! I love old enamelware. Bet the birds will love it! Can I ask you a question?? Do you have trouble with your birdbath getting slimy?? I seem to have that problem and don't know the best way of taking care of it.

Do you put it on a "flange" so you can take it off to clean it out? Even my cups and saucers outside get so yucky and need cleaned out every week.

I do have the bowl/plate on a flange Luvs. It makes it easy to pull off and wash up(-:
My feeders/water dishes need cleaning every week too. This is a nice way to do that. If you clean it often it will stay nice.

Cindee, that's the cutest thing:) You have the the most interesting, beautiful things in your garden! Eye candy everywhere you turn :) I've made a few bird baths, but they seem to be just for me to look at, the birds prefer the mud puddles in my driveway!
