what to plant around a bird bath
Comments (6)If you have cats in your area, it's best not to plant anything under a birdbath. Bird baths, as well as feeders, should be located in an open area without any plants close by where predators can hide and jump out to ambush the birds. Birds like to be able to surveil their surroundings when they are at a bird bath or feeder. It's also good to have some mature shrubs/trees within 10-15 feet to give the birds some cover where they can escape hawks, or preen themselves after bathing. Sorry I don't have any suggestions, I would only plant something pretty short around a bird bath....See MoreLook what I found in my bird bath!

Comments (5)Hi Richie, You can make one! I have a bunch in my garden (big and small, from rhubarb and petasite leaves down to small hosta leaves) that I made. Very easy. Garden Gate has a video (and if you Google "Concrete leaf casting" you'll find others). It's fun and you can make whatever size you need, color it if you wish. I just made big leaves, no base (I wanted them for butterfly "puddling" so I didn't want a base -- I put the big rhubarb leaf on a tree stump, but it's still very near the ground). Here's one of mine: Here is a link that might be useful: Leaf casting...See Moresolar bird bath heater
Comments (6)A solar powered bird bath heater is not practical. Painting the bowl black would have a bigger effect. It would convert 90% of the sunlight that hit it into heat. Solar PV panels are about 10% efficient (for light to elec to heat), so you'd need a panel 9 times the area of the bowl to have the same effect. It would also be very expensive. I have a thermostated one with a 60 watt heater. I've seen 44 watt ones that run continously, 44 watts x 24 hrs = ~1 kwH a day. My electric is about 5 cents a kwH in the winter (about 10 cents in the summer), so about 5 cents a day to run. Here is a link that might be useful: 44 watt heater...See MoreDswan
