Using pre-emergent on new lawn

I finished seeding an acre with KBG last fall. So I have lots of young grass less than an inch or two tall. What is the general rule for the amount of time to wait after seeding to apply a pre-emergent such as Dimension? I've read that some pre-emergents can damage or restrict root growth. Will Dimension damage the young grass? I seeded late August and would put Dimension down around April 1. Is that enough time?

Hey gbig2 - Good to hear from you again. Galaxy blend, A great choice for a KBG lawn. Dimension spread on April fools day will be fine for you fall seeding. Your seedling, having survived the winter will do OK with Dimension pre-M. Fertilize your new grass extra heavy the first year. Pictures? We want to see pictures. Hey Greg!

General consensus is wait until two mowings for any herbicide. Sow around Labor Day, mow second time around mid October. You did that, no? And like Billhill states - time trumps mowing. Good to go then!

Im in the same boat as you...and was wondering the same thing. I emailed Scotts about it and this is what I got, hope it helps. Mr. _________, you cannot apply any weed control product until your new seed is up, growing and has been mowed at least 4 times, regardless of when it was planted. Pre-emergent controls (Step 1 or Turf Builder with Halts) will interfere with seed germination and development. I recommend that you use Starter Fertilizer with Crabgrass Preventer or Scotts Step One for Seeding (not the regular Step 1), if crabgrass is a real problem in your lawn. Only after your lawn (the new seed) has been mowed at least 4 times can you safely use Step 1, Turf Builder with Halts or Halts (without fertilizer). Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your interest in Scotts. Please feel free to contact our company anytime we may be of assistance. I plan on giving it a shot of regular Turfbuiler as my first feeding just to encourage some faster top growth and get it going, get it mowed a bunch and 6 weeks from then hit it with step 2...Im just gonnna have to spot control any crabgrass that I do get.

Hello Dimi. My experience is exactly the opposite. Compost never seemed to do anything for my yard, but organic fertilizer greened and thickened it. Then you add in the cost difference and I'll probably never buy compost again. I have moved since I replied to this message before. Now I live in full sunlight which makes my St Augustine lawn almost too thick to push a mower through. I have not gotten serious with fertilizer since I moved in in 2014. Previous owner had no lawn at all, so the St Aug I have is what pushed out from the edges. So far the color is fine and growth rate is fine, but I keep an eye on it.

I don't know what your temps are where you're at, but normally you would be doing all of this at the wrong time of year in most other parts of the country. Fall (Sept/Oct) is the prime time for seeding. Getting back to Tupersan, I've used if before and it does a fair job at holding back the weed seeds while allowing grass seed to germinate. But keep in mind, this stuff is pretty pricey, not to mention it will only last around 5-6 weeks, if that long. I can't remember how long it lasted when I used it, but it wasn't as long as I thought it should be. Anyway, it should be long enough to get the grass germinated if the heat doesn't get you. Don't know how hot it gets in San Jose this time of year. If it gets in the 90's...don't expect a beautiful lawn real soon, because the young seedlings will die, but some should survive for a better fall planting.

My understanding of Pre-Emergent has always been that its only for plants that have not germinated yet and is used during the dormant season. It would work for preventing annual weeds next year and is not supposed to harm existing plants or turf. Here it is applied usually around the end of February before anything is greening up. My sympathy on your plight. I am in the same one. My neighbors yard is completely weedy and has all these volunteer trees and other mess coming up everywhere. I just this week sprayed the area bordering my property line with brush killer to kill the endless trees he has coming up. The existing ones cost me money every year to trim and the guy is stealing my access to the sun. I need more trees coming up there like I need a case of red spider mites. I have considered calling the city and reporting him. Tall weeds like that are not allowed in many cities.

Ok, cool. I mowed once in November but mowed mostly weeds as the grass wasn't very high. But that's how it was with my 12,000 sq ft. seeding in the fall of 2007.
So I think Dimension is the way to go but I'm having trouble finding it without fertilizer mixed in. How bad would it be to fertilize a new lawn in April? I was going to wait until May but I might have to fertilize earlier if I can find Dimension by itself.
Yes, I'll send pics later in the spring. The 2007 seeding looks great and I have good results so far with the 2008 seeding....

An option is to visit your areas Lesco / John Deere landscpe dealer. They have 50Lb bags of .10% Dimension 0-0-7 or a variety of slow release coated urea fertilizers with Dimension. Another plus to Lesco is their price. 50Lbs under $30 in most cases this year. Compare that to $55 for the 15K bag of Scotts w/Halts at Home Depot.

gbig2, i also seeded a similar galaxy blend last august, but near aug. 1... i have a huge poa annua problem, part because i overdosed the wrong fertilizer at the wrong time, and b/c am on long island.

where are you located? and do you have any poa problems?
