saving snake plant

I have a snake plant in my office that has been in too shallow a pot (started out as a dish garden with other plants) and has also been spending most of its time in dim light. Needless to say, it has experienced very spindly growth and looks terrible. The plant has put off a new shoot, and I would like to repot the new shoot and cut away and discard the rest. Now the thing is, the part of the shoot that is connecting the new rosette from the rest (the rhizome i think?) is above the soil, and the new rosette does not have roots of its own. If I just repot the new rosette will it grow its own roots?

Also, how much growth can I expect by doing this at this time of the year?
