Uummmm! I'll just say , You are a LOT more compassionate then I am (or will ever be.) I figure if a snake comes into my territory -- I protect it (the territory I mean!) Snakes and spiders are in one catagory, and it's not my list of favorites!

Actually it's probably good if it stays around. Keeps down the rodent population. Not sure if a snake that size eats bugs or not like the garter snakes but having garter snakes around is good for keeping spiders, mosquitoes, slugs, etc in check.

But I will concede that I'm not much of a fan of snakes!

We're so proud of you! Too many people fear snakes, and without them we'd be up to our ears in rodents and bugs. Our snakes are of the rodent eating kind, except for the earth snakes who live in the compost pile and eat, who knows what?
I'm sure the snake is grateful.

I saved a moth the other nite that was caught in a cobweb

Patti....you are my hero for today. What a compassionate thing to do. So many would just let the poor thing die a slow death, trapped that way. My late son who lived in the high desert No. of LA in CA, would pick up rattlers with a pick-up thingy, put them in a cooler he kept on the back of his ATV and take them out in the desert and let them go. What a brave woman you are, but I will NEVER save a snake again. lol. Here's why.

About 6 years ago the week before Mother's Day, there was a snake in the road. I usually run over them cause I hate the suckers, but that day I went out of my way not to hit it and I was so proud.

Here's what happened on Mother's Day. Husband and son's just returned home from fishing, on the patio was a 4 ft. long bullsnake. It was huge. Harmless, but still...They captured it and took it to the creek. I wanted them to kill it. :)

About 5 minutes after the boys went home, I was standing at the kitchen window. Slithering down to the patio was another snake, just as big as the last one.

My husband caught it and threw it over the fence. I told him he should have killed it. :)

Needless to say I was freaked out by then.

As my husband was walking back towards the house, there was ANOTHER huge snake laying right next to the house. This time he killed it because he was getting freaked at this point.

As he was walking back to the house after disgarding the third snake, I saw him look up towards a tree right next to the house. Yep. There was another one just as big as the others.

He got it down and killed it, by then I had died. lol.

What's the parable about the snake? Anyway, that's the way I saw it. A snake is a snake is a SNAKE.

So watch out now in case the snake is going to call all his buddies to torment you for saving it's life. lol

Oh, we later found out that particular weekend there were a LOT of snake sightings, even in people's yards in the City. No one knows what the heck was going on that day.

Besides, my cats can catch a rodent faster than a lazy snake. :) We also have Road Runners here which eats and eats baby snakes. Yay!

From time to time we would get snakes caught in the netting we used to put over the goldfish pond and koi pond and would have to cut them out. They were water snakes though. When I used to mow I would watch for snakes and toads and make sure they weren't headed for the way I was going with the mower. I mostly have garter snakes around here in the yard.

I figured you would think I was a big idiot for saving him...

I'm not afraid of snake, sort of,....If someone finds one in the yard I have to go out and see it...

When the kids were little I would let them keep one every now and then...We kept it in a large fish tank outside and fed it . One of the garter snakes grew so much he shed his skin twice. After the kids lost their interest we let them go.

BUT I do not like them in my house or I do not like to be surprised by them. Like crawling over my foot when I was wearing flip flops. Not a good feeling.

If you're an idiot Patti, then so am I.:-) I would have saved the snake too.

We do kill Copperheads, but only if they are in our yard. I had a friend step on one once. It was a slow and painful recovery for her.

I don't mind non poisonous snakes, I'll even hold them, trouble is I don't know which are poisonous, my DH does, so I trust him to only pick up "safe" snakes.

I once handled boa constrictiors when I did volunteer work at the zoo. Of course the zoo handlers were with me :o)

Patti, no kindness goes unnoticed. I believe that the kindness we do for our fellow creatures comes back into our lives many times over. It is wrong to kill something just because you don't understand it. You know I wouldn't have left him there to die. I hope he wasn't so injured that he won't be able to survive. Thank you for helping him.

I am deathly afraid of snakes. That being said I could never bring myself to kill one. I do have the boys kill any of the copperheads that show up but the black snakes are always welcome. They control the rodents in my yard since the cats are not allowed outside. But if I see a snake, you best get out of my way cause I will run you down to get away!

Patti good for you. Did you know what kind of snake it was. I was never afraid of snakes. But I had only seen garter snakes,used to catch them all the time. I think that it about the only "common" snake we get in MN. When I lived in Texas for a few years I once had a black snake crawl across on of my sandal clad foot. I asked my husband what kind of snake is crawling across my foot. He didn't tell me til after the snake was gone that it was a water moccasin, very poisonous. He didn't want to freak me out.

Good for you. No animal should be killed because it's not understood. You did a good thing, and I would have done the same. Snakes don't frighten me . I would never dream of killing a spider. In fact I let them live in my pantry and there are no pantry moths any more. I rescue my bees from the birdbath if they fall in. Never get stung. I even blow on them to resuscitate them. All living things need our protection because we have taken so much of their habitat.

I agree with Marilyn and of course all the others that say you did a kind and righteous thing. I hope the snake will be OK.

Fear of something that means no harm to you doe not give anyone the license to harm or kill the poor creature. We raised our children to value the life of all creatures. How people treat animals reflects on how they will treat anyone. There I've said it.

I would NEVER run over any living creature, even a disgusting tranchula, which creeps me out really bad. That's cruel.

I cut a bunny-rabbit out of some kind of sports net once. That's as brave as I get.

I killed a couple of snakes in my life, but I have let lots more live, even so I am afraid of them. I don't know what kind, unless they rattle.

One snake was stuck in the fencing of my chicken pen, and the other was hunting coy in my fish pond.

No regrets there.

Not sure what I would have done in Patti's place, but generally if they don't bother me, I don't bother them.

I'm glad you didn't just kill it. I have had a snake killed before, only because they were inside my house. Otherwise I leave them alone or chased them out of my yard with the lawnmower.

I am not a fan of snakes, any kind...Just last Sun. I looked out on the back porch and there was a huge, 6' long, snake...The 2 feral cats were "guarding" this thing and I was afraid it might bit them...DH was gone for the day and most of the neighborhood men were away, but I did get 1 fellow, who came and took a look and decided to get another fellow...The 2nd fellow came down the street looking like the great white hunter with a rifle slung over his shoulder..They tried to catch it and where going to put it in the woods but when it got into the sun, they noticed, it was a Diamond Back Rattler..There was no way, he was going to let that thing go and he did shoot it.. I had them put it in a box because my DH would never have believed me..That evening, we had everyone in the neighborhood coming to take a peek at our new pet..I just hope he didn't have relatived in the area that might come looking for him.....
But, we do have good snakes in the area, not a lot but every once in a while, you'll see them sunning themselves and you let them alone but this was not a good one.....
