Can I save my dying snake plant?

This is right after reporting and watering.

This is the “pup” I cut from it.

I’ve had this plant for exactly a year and it was doing great even grew a pup. Two weeks ago I noticed yellowing in the middle of the plant. I water it every three to four weeks. I automatically thought since it was yellowing in the center and the soil was dry it needed to be watered and maybe needed some more indirect light during the day on our porch rather then inside. The plant got worse, so today I decided to repot. I purchased a cactus soil mix and plant fertilizer. when repotting I noticed the roots were very dry (maybe dead). I cut the pup off and replanted both in their own pots. I used 50/50 of old soil (basically mulch), new soil, fertilizer, and watered. I currently switched them to one of our bathrooms that is very humid, since it’s too cold outdoors for them. Does anyone have anymore recommendations? Did I do everything correctly or did I just make it worse? Thanks in advance for any advice!

It looks like it rotted from too much water. It's a small plant in a big pot, and it's mid winter and this is a succulent. I don't think this one will make it. My snake plants spend the season outside and may be watered every day, but in the house (in the Winter), I hardy water them at all.

The pup should be in a pot with holes. If the roots are small, that pot might also be too large. Too much soil around the roots staying wet after watering.

Are you sure it had mealy bugs? I don't use pesticide sprays ! -- for mealies, just dab them with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. The chemicals you've used have probably contributed to the plant's demise. You say it's a huge plant, so what I'd do is take some cuttings (about 6" long). Wash them in dish-soapy water that's a comfortable temperature for your hands (not too hot or too cold). Be certain that all the bugs are off of the cuttings, rinse, then put the cuttings in a glass of water. If there's enough life left in them, they will grow fine in water for a LONG time, and if the mother plant dies you'll have the new starts.

Hi, I would sugeest that you remove all dead debris and scraggly looking stems and start over. Take what is free of bugs and "healthy" looking and repot it into a smaller pot using fresh soil. Keep it in shade or filtered light and water when it appears to be dry on the surface of the soil. You can also root these in water if you wanted to try to save some of the stems. Good Luck, Kelly

Hey, I bought a snake plant 3 weeks ago and it looks like it's dying day by day. It's in a bright room but doesn't get direct sunlight and I haven't watered it since I bought it as the soil looks extremely moist - almost wet. You need to get them growing properly first before thinking of what you do with them at a later stage. If you are new to this, best keep them individually potted as they are different types, you can always group pots in a container and cover rims with stones for a group look! Whether they will pull round remains to be seen as they look pretty damaged at the moment. You won't be able to buy a soil off the shelf, sadly no one sems to sell anything that resembles a good fast draining mix, that's why we need the separate ingredients to mix together. Gill
