Thoughts on Lesco vs KBG blend
Comments (12)andedon....Which seed are you going to overseed with then? After hedging for weeks since, like you my lawn doesn't live up to MY expectations but still looks very good to the average person walking by, I am going to overseed with a rye/fescue/KBG mix, but I am also adding some extra KBG to it. My fear about overseeding with straight KBG is that I still have some spots where the turf is not as thick, as well as some small bare spots (a few inches wide, usually not visible since the tall grass fills it in). Having seen people's lawns who overseeded with different types of grass, you can easily tell, as there are "patches" of different grass. It looks horrible; I definitely don't want that. Therefore, my "plan" is to continue the uniformity by continuing with the rye/fescue/KBG mix so any bare spot fills in to look like the rest of the lawn while slowly introducing some more KBG. My goal is to overseed with more KBG each year, slowly raising the percentage of KBG in the lawn. Some of the KBG purists here would probably laugh if they read my plan, but considering the heat I would get into with my wife if I killed the lawn and started over, it is the best I can do. I really am intrigued by some of the KBG varieties and wish I could go in that direction, but it isn't possible right now....See MoreStraight Midnight II or Blend?? Bestlawn/AJ/others please advise!
Comments (5)This is the thread. Farther down is my suggestion after you mentioned you weren't necessarily interested in high traffic tolerance. You forgot LOL. Blue Velvet (or MII, your choice) Kingfisher Bewitched It sounds like you have a lot of lawn to cover, so I can understand you don't want to have to overseed often. But, I have to say regular overseeding is always recommended to maintain diversity of the blend and desired traits of each. What happens is shifting as the stronger variety or varieties dominate the weaker one(s) over time. Of this blend, I have no idea which will likely dominate, but shifting happens no matter the blend and happens when there is a mix of other species, such fescue/kbg/ryegrass. Perhaps you never heard of it before, but you also haven't always known of lawn care forums that advise on proper maintenance such as "mow high, water deeply, don't fertilize in summer, overseed regularly, etc." Before you found forums offering advice, you probably didn't know about most of the things you know now. I always suggest overseeding regularly. It just happened to be even more important when it comes to an aggressive type like North Star. As I say, I can understand you don't want to have to overseed so regularly. I still recommend it, but you might choose to do it less often like every 3-4 years or so. But please do it. Without elaborating on reasons for blending rather than a monostand, let me just say the Midnight types are especially susceptible to powdery mildew. This is a disease most associated with shade conditions, but even if you don't have shade, you likely will experience days of low cloud cover and high humidity. Such days also increase chances of PM. Therefore, it's best to have varieties like Kingfisher and Bewitched to protect the stand on those occasions. If you want the extended explanation, just let me know....See MoreKBG seed types (Bestlawn's list)
Comments (1)Only thing I want to point out is that anyone who lives in hotter climates, say Maryland and further south, you want to think REALLY hard about using a full KBG lawn. I am referring to the blends as well. I lived in Maine. Grass is so easy to grow up North it's silly. Heck, I planted in August up there with awesome. I have had two lawns down here in NC. Much different animal. Not saying you can't use KBG down here, but if you have a south facing lawn lawn that gets blazing sun down here, it's going to fry. More people fail with an all KBG lawn down here than succeed. You must have the right micro climate to get it too work (ex., partial shade from a building, house, tree, etc.) Take my free online advice for what it's worth but don't say you haven't been warned....See MoreWhere to buy Midnight?
