how can you tell

Hi everyone,

I don't mean to be-labor this, but I am trying to figure out when to apply round-up to the ?poa patches that I see starting to sprout - the problem is, it is still quite cold right now, and the grass really hasn't started coming out of dormancy yet, but I think that these little and mid-sized areas that I see emerging in a slightly different color ARE, in fact, early poa. Is there a sure way to determine if these patches are, in fact, poa, before I round them up? I just don't want to round-up normal lawn spots. Any advice?

If the patches are small or there are individual clumps, I would try pulling them up by hand if the ground is moist.

Doesn't really matter if they are poa or not. You'll have to read the label on the "R" word stuff to determine if you can use it. The label will tell you in what temperature ranges to apply the herbicide. I imagine it's still too cold in New York right now for it to be effective, but do check the label. If temps coincide with the grass emerging from dormancy and you're worried about killing wanted grass, then you can apply the herbicide to Poa only with a paint brush or sponge brush. Tedious but effective although you'll have an awful lot of Poa by then.

Can't tell if you're talking about Poa annua or Poa trivialis, but I guess it's PA. You can tell by comparing the different characteristic parts. If the links in the above post do not show and identify individual parts of the plant (I didn't look), then you can google to find more. Or, you can take samples w/roots to your nearest Cooperative Extension Office and they will identify the plants for you.

Very new to growing. I am the brown thumb in my green thumb family. my grandfather could bring dead plants back to life, i killed them. receently, ironically after his death, ive been able to grow and keep plants alive. this is my eureka verigated lemon tree. after newly getting my meyer lemon tree which has already bloomed, ive been concerned about how this one is doing. i found the term sucker branches in my search that lead me here. i am concerned something needs to be trimmed for the health and growth of the tree and i have no idea how or what to trim. In early december, the lower branches bloomed (however my husband didnt water it the week i was away and the tree dropped leaves and the buds). are any if these branches needing to be removed? i purchased it about 10 months ago, the bottom branches were not present at the time of purchase i believe

Thanks duluthinbloomz4. I was a little worried about the Ostrich fern when I purchased it. It did appear to be yellowing/browning a little: But for $2, I figured I'd give it a shot. The Japanese beech fern still has a nice green color to it. Here's a pic of it: I have had several online gardeners tell me that buying plants from the clearance racks after their growing/blooming season is over is one of the best/cheapest ways to get your gardens established. But when you're a newbie gardener standing there in front of a bunch of plants that look like their dying, you get a little intimidated. Other than checking for root-rot, I'm not real sure what is/isn't normal.

How can you tell if a canning recipe has been approved?

The source is your first and primary clue. There are standard safe sources for canning recipes - the Ball Books and their equivalents, other texts listed here in many discussions, and the NCHFP website that all other approved resources are based on. This particular source and of its recipes in no way claim to be USDA approved. A tested and approved source will carry that USDA seal or USDA guidelines will at least be acknowledged. Without that info you can almost always bet it is untested. Second is the nature of the source. Is its focus canning or cooking? Cooks.com is a cooking resource, not a canning recipe resource, and is generally considered a source to be avoided when it comes to canning. That doesn't mean some of the recipes there may not be safe, just that they haven't been tested and have to be individually evaluated. This particular recipe is straight vinegar, no dilution with water. Straight vinegar brine recipes will almost always be safe. However NCHFP offers instructions for Pickled Carrots that has been tested and approved so why not go with the approved source? Dave

Though they remain green all year, evergreens still have a dormancy period, and in spring start to put out new growth. They are also subject to stress or death when transplanted in hot or below freezing weather. With my evergreen bonsai and potted pre-bonsai conifers, I repot in spring when the candles have extended but the new needles are still held tight against the candle.

RoundupÂ or glyphosate is a herbicide that works by systemic action. The weed to be killed must be actively growing for the herbicide to work. If the poa annua is still dormant the herbicide may not work.

The catch-22 in killing poa with RoundupÂ is that you have to wait until it's growing...but your good grass will grow at the same time ... so the RoundupÂ will kill them both.
