Kill Crab Grass before I rennovate?

We are preparing to landscape a yard that has been neglected for decades. The existing "lawn" which is basically a mixture of what grows naturally when watered, has lots of crab grass in it during the summer months. My question is what's the best way to prevent the crab grass from invading our new sod and surrounding planting beds? Should I use a preemergent now and then just till the existing grass before putting the sod in. Or should I not bother and remove the existing grass entirely before the crab grass germinates and then do the preemergent? The people at the gardening store told me I can do nothing to kill the crab grass until it begins to grow in spring? We want to have the new sod in around spring. Any advice greatly appreciated.

If you are going to sod the yard, do it as soon as practical before the crabgrass seed begins to sprout. If your winter is going like ours, you are already too late - my weeds are popping like crazy. Starting with sod almost eliminates the possibility of new crabgrass getting started. If you were starting seed in the spring, then you are guaranteed to have a full crabgrass lawn by July. The best time to reseed is in fall or late summer.

Where do you live? You'll have to be more specific. Since you said NoCal and since most of the population that thinks it is in NoCal lives in the Bay Area, I'm going to assume you live there. But if you live inland towards Sacramento, then your exact location becomes more important. If you are on the bay, then you can get away with cool season grasses like fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. IF you are inland where the temps get to the high 90s, then you are in warm season territory. You'll want either bermuda sod or St Augustine.

NEVER ROTOTILL soil in preparation for grass. When you rototill there is no way to keep that machine from gouging deep into the soil and bucking over tree roots, rocks, and just tougher soil. What you end up with is a level surface on top but an uneven surface under all the fluffy soil. When the fluffy soil settles, it settles to the uneven surface below. That leaves the surface uneven and you will want to level it. Just start with a level surface and you will be 3 years ahead.

When you install the sod, be sure to roll it down with a rented, water filled, roller. Grass roots will not grow through the air to reach the moist soil below. You must have good sod to soil contact. If the area is small you can just walk over it as long as you hit all of it.

Here is the 1-2-3 of lawn care. It's really this simple.
2. Water deeply and infrequently. Deeply means at least an hour in every zone, all at once. Infrequently means monthly during the cool months and no more than weekly during the hottest part of summer. If your grass looks dry before the month/week is up, water longer next time. Deep watering grows deep, drought resistant roots. Infrequent watering allows the top layer of soil to dry completely which kills off many shallow rooted weeds.
1. Mulch mow at the highest setting on your mower. Most grasses are the most dense when mowed tall. Bermuda, centipede, and bent grasses are the most dense when mowed at the lowest setting on your mower. Dense grass shades out weeds and uses less water when tall. Dense grass feeds the deep roots you're developing in 1 above.
1. Fertilize regularly. I fertilize 4 times per year using organic fertilizer. Which fertilizer you use is much less important than numbers 1 and 2 above.

Hmm, OK, I will consider that. I was trying to make this border with my neighbor look better sooner rather than later, as their lawn looks gorgeous and it's a bit of a dump on my side. Hoeing that clay is not a pleasant prospect when it's hot and dry in August and September. It will be like rock. In the event I have to use some herbicide, what do you think about the question of how long to wait after that before planting seed?

Where in the United States are you? Have you had a good reliable soil test done? What is the soils pH? How much organic matter is in that soil? Have you talked with your states Cooperative Extension Service people about which grasses will do best in sun and which in shade in your area of the world? Aside from that good reliable soil test for pH and major nutrient levels perhaps these simple soil tests may be of some help. 1) Soil test for organic matter. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. For example, a good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top. 2) Drainage. Dig a hole 1 foot square and 1 foot deep and fill that with water. After that water drains away refill the hole with more water and time how long it takes that to drain away. Anything less than 2 hours and your soil drainsÃ¢ÂÂ too quickly and needs more organic matter to slow that drainage down. Anything over 6 hours and the soil drains too slowly and needs lots of organic matter to speed it up. 3) Tilth. Take a handful of your slightly damp soil and squeeze it tightly. When the pressure is released the soil should hold together in that clump, but when poked with a finger that clump should fall apart. 4) Smell. What does your soil smell like? A pleasant, rich earthy odor? Putrid, offensive, repugnant odor? The more organic matter in your soil the more active the soil bacteria will be and the nicer your soil will smell. 5) Life. How many earthworms per shovel full were there? 5 or more indicates a pretty healthy soil. Fewer than 5, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, indicates a soil that is not healthy.

See how crab grass comes back to one main plant? Kik and couch have runners. Kik has a greener shiner leaf than crab grass. Couch has a lot finer leaf than couch. Google images of all 3 grasses so u get and idea of what to look for leaf wise as well. Once u spot each type it'll ( excuse the language) stick out like dogs nutsÃ°ÂÂÂ kikuyu will be the fastest and greenest. Look for seed branches sprouting up. Track them back to the mother plant and remove by hand. Including roots. It will be easier to remove if you've had some rain or watered in the last day or 2. Hope this helps Tim

Rototilling was a mistake for that reason but also because as the fluffed up soil settles, it will settle unevenly over the next 3 years giving you a bumpier and bumpier lawn as time goes on. Nutgrass loves swampy conditions. If you are watering more frequently than once every week or two, then you care helping the nutgrass. Similarly crabgrass loves getting daily water, especially when the seed is germinating in the spring. In the early spring, once a month water should be sufficient until the temps get into the 70s all the time. Toward the end of this month you can spray the nutgrass with something like Sedgehammer or Image for nutgrass. There's a spray for crabgrass, too, but the name escapes me. Kill those out and bring in either new sod or seed for the fescue. Don't wait for spring to do that. Fall is the best time of year for new grass in the north.
