Do I need covers for grapes?
Comments (16)I may have found the perfect bags for grapes. I'll be trying them this year. They are Organza bags. They are used for wedding gifts and are made from a thin nylon mesh with ties at the top. They may look a little "frilly", and the neighbors may give you strange looks, but they should hold up well, breath and not hold moisture, and be easy to install around the developing clusters. They come in lots of sizes and colors and are fairly inexpensive. In cool climates, darker colors may speed ripening, while in hot areas, light colors would reduce sun scald. They may work well with peaches, apples, etc. too, although I'm not sure how one would make them squirrel proof. Comments (5)Lind, I spray all of my grapes since I have a few disease-susceptible ones and while spraying I hit them all. I didn't have enough room so gave my Steuben to my neighbor a few years ago. Its only a couple feet from my property and it always looks fine even though they never spray it. So it will probably do OK. I think its an excellent eating grape with a unique spicy flavor, but it has seeds which is a big downside these days. Most fuzzy kiwis don't ripen but Saanichton has been ripening well for me. I am trying several varieties of early ripening fuzzy kiwi to get the best one and Saanichton is the only one that has fruited. The hardy kiwis are also liked by many people but my kids won't eat them and they are my indicators of what average Americans like. I have some more hardy kiwi varieties ripening this year and maybe there will be one that my kids like. My kids do like muscadines, I was surprised. I had to pull mine up a few years ago to make room for another experiment I was doing but I plan on eventually putting some back in. Scott...See MoreWhen to start bagging grapes?
Comments (9)If people only knew. Half my grapes were killed last winter, all were killed off to the ground so I don't have anything this year. Looking good for next year though (I have a new plan, temporary low tiers until they get thick when I'll let them go to the high tier). I've seen one house around here that has whole trees bagged with some kind of fabric. I've got some netting and am thinking up something like that for the grapes. At least make the squirrels do some acrobatics to get to them....See MoreMy ACTUAL food produce box
Comments (12)Hahaha! Don't worry, I'm eating!!! I just made a huge salad and added hard-boiled eggs and some tomato. Normally I don't care for tomatoes in salads, but I have them, so I did. I had a pear, but they're still too hard. The grapes and oranges are so good! I had just bought a 10-lb bag of Yukon Gold potatoes so I now have lots! The ones in my box are russets....See Moremrsg47
