What are your plans for the early garden? When/what will you:

Welp - this is the plan, may need to alter depending on weather constraints....

Have chard, lettuce, arugula and various herbs in the garden now. English peas are starting to climb.

Ordered tomato seeds yesterday. Will start them and a few peppers first week of February indoors on a heat mat. After germination they're moved to the cold frame until time to transplant ... usually mid to late March.

Hi Adam and everyone, Hmm. So it was not just me having little success with Minnow. Someone had problem with his Thalia earlier this year. I forgot where he got it from. Sun Disc/Sundisc didn't live long for me either. Just too crowded in my garden. Craigford is a mid season bloomer. Much earlier than Geranium. Looks almost like Geranium. Smells good too. re Leucojum. LOL. Amanda is right. Way too many leaves. Stay green longer than narcissi too. :-P But I love them. Planted only 25 the first year. Loved it so much I added 100 the next year. A mistake, because they multiply like rabbits. :-) I suggest that you plant no more than 25-30 and quite far apart, say 2' to give them room to increase. I like mine right in front of the border between Alchemilla mollis so I can admire its delicate beauty and Alchemilla can hide the Leucojum later in the season. Since it is white, it goes well with everything. I have clay soil. I learned that large size narcissi don't mind it one bit, but miniatures don't like it at all. I planted a couple hundred of N. bulbocodium on my lawn that had not really been cultivated hoping to get a drift of it. Didn't work. Only one bloomed then totally disappeared. Nell's reading suggestion is good. My soil is heavy clay. I have amended it over the years. In fact, I add leaves in the planting hole as I go. Here is what I actually do when I plant blulbs: Dig a deep hole, place a handfull of leaves and a pinch of bone meal at the bottom- a bit of soil-large bulb-a bit of soil & bone meal-a handful of leaves-a bit of soil with bone meal-minor or small bulb-soil-leaves-soil-another bulb-soil-leaves and a bit of soil. I call it composting in situ. LOL. My own invention. Works like charm. My garden beds is quite loamy now. Still rather heavy, though. I may plant 2 or 3 bulbs in one hole, depending on what I have. When I have mulch and/or compost I dump the whole thing on top of the beds whenever I clean them up.

Rita - I don't know about "magic touch".....I think maybe it's just luck?! HA! Marg - Yes spring bulbs do give some colour to a garden in early spring when everything else is looking rather shabby. We have a free compost centre where I live. I go out there a lot and have found so many things there that people just discard. Last year someone threw out a bunch of hyacinth and tulip bulbs along with some grape hyacinth bulbs so I brought them home and planted them and that is where these hyacinths came from. The tulips also have buds. I will get some pictures of them when they bloom. It'll be a total surprise as to what colour they are but I won't complain as it doesn't get much better than free! ngraham - Yes that hydrangea is new. I got it half off at Home Depot. It is HUGE and for 8 dollars it was a bargain. I had one the same at my last house and it came back faithfully every year and always had the bright pink blooms. I have two other hydrangeas already, an Annabelle and a Summer Lace. Jason

Finding tomatoes that do well in the fall is a HUGE challenge and is so dependent on the summer and early autumn heat. Here are the criteria I use when trying to select tomatoes for fall: 1) Days to Maturity 2) Flavor 3) Ability to set flowers in heat In a way, you could say Days to Maturity is the MOST IMPORTANT factor and, technically, you would be right BUT it seems more important to me that the tomato be able to flower AND set fruit while the weather is still quite warm. Some tomatoes that have the "right" DTM still won't produce a good fall crop because many of their August flowers don't set fruit until the temperatures are more to their liking in mid to late September. And, there is no way to know in advance which tomatoes will or won't set fruit in heat, except perhaps based on the experience of other tomato growers in the hot regions of the country. Based on my experience in growing tomatoes in Oklahoma and Texas, I would say the best fall crops come from plants that: a) produce smaller rather than larger tomatoes b) produce on determinate plants set out earlier than what is usually advised for fall tomatoes c) are often advertised as "plants that produce all summer long", like Arkansas Traveler, Porter or Homestead 24 I generally choose for flavor, and tend to avoid all those tomatoes bred specifically to produce in the heat like Heat Wave or Sunmaster because they lack flavor. For fall cherry tomatoes I favor Sun Gold, Rosalita, and Black Cherry. For smaller slicing or salad tomatoes I usually go with Porter, Black Plum, Martino's Roma or Heidi. For larger tomatoes, I usually go with Purple Cherokee, Earl's Faux, Black Krim, Persimmon and Better Boy. Although Better Boy lacks the outstanding flavor of the heirlooms, it sometimes produces like gangbusters in spite of our extreme heat. Two of my best producing years with Better Boy, I had spring-planted plants produce tomatoes until the first frost in October, and had to pick dozens and dozens of green fruit the day before the freeze. Last year, Persimmon, Black Krim and Cherokee Purple set fruit in August and September despite our high temps that kept hitting 110 to 114 degrees. I thought that was amazing. This year I am going to try a lot of heirlooms for fall tomatoes, especially the heirloom winter storage types. I also am especially interested in seeing how Neves Azorean Red, Cherokee Chocolate, Champion and Little Brandywine do as a fall crop. In the past, Bucks County produced well all summer and into the fall but it appears to be "gone" this year, and there has been speculation in the tomato world that Little Brandywine is, in fact, Bucks County simply re-named. To get a fall tomato harvest, I do ALL of the following: In early- to mid-July, I cut back a few of the healthiest tomato plants to 12" to 18" tall and feed them a good balanced fertilizer. I keep them well-watered and they are usually flowering sometime in August and producing fruit in September In early to mid-June, I set out fall tomatoes that I have raised (in 4" pots) from seed outdoors in the heat. Raising them outside in the hot weather is hard, but it ensures they can handle the heat. I like to get these in the ground as early as possible in June. Setting them out later in June makes it more likely we'll get fruit before a freeze. I always set out a couple of fresh plants in VERY LARGE containers that can be pulled or pushed into the garage to avoid the first freeze and then brought back outside as soon as weather allows. If an early frost is threatening, I will cover two to four of my most productive fall plants with a blanket or heavy 6mm plastic. If you can protect them and get them through that first really cold weather spell of autumn, we often have 4 to 6 weeks of "Indian Summer" and will get a lot more ripe fruit during that time frame. Finally, if really cold weather is inevitable, I pull up the tomato plants that have a lot of fruit and hang them upside down in my tornado shelter or garage. A lot of those fruit will continue to ripen, sometimes for weeks! This is especially true for cherry tomatoes. Many years I pick a lot of green ones in the fall, but would rather have ripe ones than green ones (!) so anything that can be done to stretch the harvest is worth the time involved, I think. And, once in a blue moon the first fall freeze will be VERY, VERY LATE here....sometimes after Thanksgiving, and in a year like that, I have a huge fall harvest and am pretty much the happiest woman in Oklahoma!

Well, one advantage you have, ksgreenman, is that you don't have to dig down several feet deep and wide to move the wrongly placed rose to its new spot -- which also has to be dug 1-2 feet down and across in order to transplant the first rose. So far this spring I have had to transplant 2 roses, and I've got 2 more coming up here in the next few days. All you have to do is carry the container to a new spot if you don't like the old arrangement! : ) Kate

I plan on planting....

Indoors;

Tomatoes, Peppers, Artichokes Jan 1st.

Squash, Melons, Cucumbers Jan 20th.

I hope to be able to plant them outdoors on or around March 1st weather permitting. Root crops and Sunflowers will follow. I still have Onions and Eggplant in the ground from last year.

Seedlings already started: kohlrabi, broccoli raab, Hy.broccoli, parsley, lavender, cilantro, leeks, onions, scallions, some lettuces, male, red and green cabbage,.and celery. Already wintersowed/direct sowed some carrots, radishes and shallots under low tunnels. There are also some lettuces, kohlrabi, and arugula that survived our winter without protection that I went ahead and covered for spring as well as a handful of broccoli plants. I'm not sure if they will head after overwintering but I don't see why not so I'm protecting them as well. Next week ill start the rest of the lettuces and then cauliflower, di cicco broccoli and a few others indoors. Those will all get transplanted out under double. Cover end of Jan/early Feb at which time ill also direct sow beets and spinach and more carrots. I still have a couple frames to construct so I need to get a move on. I'll be starting time, peppers.and eggplants end of Jan also. All my cucurbits ill start in Feb for may transplant. Hopefully all my nightshades can go out in April assuming I got spring stuff in early enough. Peas will also direct sow in feb, which will then hopefully be done in time for may/early June beans. I can't wait for.it to be march! Hope to be getting my first harvests by then!

I've heard that they are very sensitive to root disturbance, and to only let them get 2 true leaves then transplant very carefully.

Man youse guys are early!!! I won't even start my maters and melons until late March indoors. Right now I'm thinking of pruning the fruit trees and ordering some seed but that's it! Still in hibernation mode...

T bird: I've read that too but last year transplanted acorn squash, zuchinni, charentais and cucumbers Nd they all grew fine. I used peat pots though so I could minimize root disturbance. The melons sat for a while but I think they needed food and after feeding they took off. Too bad nearly everything contracted bacterial wilt eventuually. :(

Oh and the squash had flowers already before transplant. Maybe I just got lucky though?

vgkg, spring comes early in the south. So does summer. In my area, we are in a race with the sun to get a good crop of beans and tomatoes before it gets so hot that the plants stop setting fruit. If you look at the zone numbers, you can see that everyone's preparations start about two weeks earlier for each zone you go south.

I live right on the line between zone 7b and 8. I will start peppers and eggplants in mid February, since they take a very long time to grow. I could start tomatoes then too, but I usually wait until about 4 weeks before last frost, which is April 1, to start them. I like to be able to take the plants outside at least during the day. The plants just grow better that way.

Long about April 1, I start paying extra attention to the weather channel. As soon as our night temps are consistently above 55, I start direct sowing summer crops like cucs, squash, beans, cowpeas, etc. My raised beds are framed in concrete, so the soil warms up fast. This is a very big advantage in early spring. It can be a downer in mid summer....

just started, , onions and parsely for transplant in april.
peppers for transplants june 10th.
will start broccoli and cabbage plants Feb 15th for April planting out
will start peas carrots, beets, greens and salad ingredients out in april.
Tomatoes get started beggining of March and transplanted with the peppers in june 10th
For fall crops, I will start more broccoli and cabbage plants to replace the garlic that was planted in Oct last fall. As well as broccoli plants to replace the onions.
other beds will be repalnted with turnips, bush peas, and assorted greens and salad stuff including lots of raddish.
green beans will replace greens may 18th.
Parsnips and potatoes get started in may for fall harvest.

Can anyone help, I'm am trying to learn more about different types of lavender and I am wondering which one is best to use in sachets. I live in Arizona would I be able to grow it here?
