You know we have only had 3 "somewhat" sunny days in june here in MA!!! Im not so much worried about my garden but more about my sanity...my 3 kids are makin me nuts all cooped up in the house!!!! Plus it doesnt help that Ive been slacking on my weeding because of the weather so the weeds are a bit out of control...so looks like the first hint of sun ill be in the garden pullin crab grass and the overbearing morning glories!

As far as fertilizer goes, I've had great results mixing worm castings, bone meal, and greensand (about 5:2:1) in with the potting soil at the start of the season, and top-dressing again 2 to 3 months later. As for overcrowding, you may want to get a very large pot for your zucchini, sink it into the soil, and lift it every week or so to prevent its roots from getting out of the pot. Or build a real partition for it, or put it by itself in one of the 1x3s. Your soil mix sounds a little dubious. Peat moss has two undesirable properties: it's very acidic (most peat-based potting soils contain some lime to balance the acidity); and it's hard to keep properly wet. I've had containers of peat-based soil that would just shed water. After a thorough watering, I could look underneath the surface and see that almost all of the "soil" was still dry. This generally stunts the growth of whatever's growing in it. Pots can be sunk in a basin of lukewarm water once in a while so that they're forced to saturate, but you can't do that with your gardens. Your zucchini may have sunk its roots down into a lower layer that stays wetter for some reason, maybe because of slow drainage (which is another hazard for containers placed directly on a flat floor). My favorite potting soil is Ocean Forest. Your garden center or hydroponics store may stock it or be able to order some, so that you don't have to pay shipping. It comes with a good amount of organic fertilizer, and you can add the mix I mentioned above when the nutrients start to deplete, and at the start of next season. It also seems to do a good job of holding moisture. I'll bet it makes a big difference.

Agree w everyone. Peas did well even afterthe bunnies did a job on them. Lettuce was fine. I have one Red Knight Pepper with five fruit on it. Have fifteen heirloom tomato varieties which were very slow to set fruit but now have nice, blemish free tomatoes on them. Prudens Purple, Kellogs Breakfast, and Delicious seem to be doing the best. Garlic crop was super except I found bulbs/tops maturing at different times this year. The early drying ones are going into the use right away jar. I have planted a second and third crop of bush and pole beans, radishes, and hope to replant peas annd lettuce for a fall crop after I get the potatoes out. Love the Baby Romaine lettuce, Little Gem. All of this in five 4 X 8 foot raised beds. Summer squash and zukes doing OK but some critter loves my yellow squash blossoms and nips them off neatly each day. Fish emulsion seems to keep them away for a day or two but my yeild is down. First three apples on my dwarf apple trees (3) planted a couple years ago. Been gardening for over 60 years and this has been among the toughest so far: may get better.Just so thankful that I have had nine wonderful retirement years to mess around in the garden. Just wish there were more hours in the day. Gardening does awaken the spirit and open your eyes.

They ARE cucumbers. Technically, they are Cucumis melo, while regular cucumbers are C. sativa, and if your fail to pick them will ultimately mature into something sort of like a banana melon but not sweet, but picked young, until the seeds start to harden, they taste like any other cucumber and can be used for any use, pickles, whatever. Yard longs/asparagus beans have a slightly different flavor than regular beans, almost a faint mushroom-like flavor that is very delicious, but delicate. In pickled dilly beans I'd doubt you'd notice any difference at all. You might, however, want to do just a very small trial batch, because the yard longs are more tender than regular beans, and might get too mushy. I have only frozen mine, never canned them.
