Passion flowers, anyone?

Anyone here grow these indoors? I hear they are very hard to bloom indoors, but I have the urge to buy one online. I love the Inspiration, but apparently its a bit fussy, so maybe not a good choice for my first one. I want a small grower, not over 1-3' long when mature. Any suggestions? It will be in a west window, getting at least four hours of sun a day. Thanks.

RAndi, if you can give your Passionvine enough sun, it may bloom indoors..A south or west window would do fine. I know you don't take plants outside, so there will be some work involved..They go semi-dormant in winter anyway and flower in mid summer.
I haven't had a passionvine in yrs, but this summer sowed seeds..now I've got a baby passionvine..it's growing like crazy right now, but started to slow down a bit the last couple wks.
There are numerous varieties of Passionvine..Are you looking for a mini size? Toni

I've seen a fairly good list at Logee's, including a small one with yellow flowers. Don't know anything about it--the only ones I have are outside and get gnawed to shreds by the Gulf Frittilary caterpillars, but the butterflies are worth it!

Wiley, I have plenty of little sprouts coming up from my lavender-flowered passiflora incarnata and would be happy to share a few bare-root shoots if I can find any more this late in the season (I just finished pulling & discarding a bunch, as I already have 4 potted and rooted for an upcoming local plant swap.) My plant was a gift sent bare-root from a fellow gardener in the southeastern U.S., where these plants are native, up to Virginia and southeastern Pennsylvania. It is perfectly winter-hardy without protection other than the usual winter mulch of shredded leaves in my USDA Zone 7 garden on the mid-NJ coast. Don't despair if you don't see anything in spring - these didn't earn their name "Maypop" for nothing! Due to our cooler spring this year, mine was up quite late, but has made up for it. I don't know how well it would fare through a zone 6 winter, but it wouldn't hurt to try. I would recommend planting it in a large, deep nursery pot sunk into the ground, as once established they do send up shoots quite a distance from the mother plant. Let me know if you are still interested - there should still be time for it to establish some roots before the soil cools.

Is it in the ground or in a pot? If it's in a pot, use a feed that is formulated for flowering plants or tomatoes. The three main ingredients will be N (Nitrogen, promotes soft, leafy growth), P (Phosphorus, for root growth but also flower growth) and K (Potassium for flowers and fruits). (This is of course a gross simplification but will do for our purposes.) Look for one that contains more K than N. If it's in the ground and not flowering, it could be that the soil is too rich and/or it's not getting enough sun. Passion flowers in the ground flower best it seems on fairly poor, even rubble-filled, soil. I had to move one from my back garden where it was having far too easy a life and making masses of leaf growth but no flowers, to my sunnier front garden where the soil was poorer. I also put some rubble in the planting hole. It won't hurt to sprinkle on some Sulphate of Potash (Potassium) either.

Are you in SW Canada or California?

There are passion vines that will grow outdoors in either location. Much bigger and easier than indoors.

I have a friend in Vancouver BC that has several and another in LA that has tons.

Wow, Ninecrow, that is a GORGEOUS bloom! Buyorsell, I'm in S. California. I don't want to grow outdoors - that's why I asked if there are any that will bloom indoors. I'm going to try a Lady Margaret, since I read they stay small if potted and do well indoors. Thanks to all for your advice.

The only Problem is, is that this Passion Fower is NOT a Small plant... So if you only have a small window, then this one is Not a good Idea....

Citrina is a small passion flower [yellow flowers] with duck feet like leaved that is supposed to grow indoors, available at Logees. I would guess you'd need a southern exposure as they need strong light.
