Got goodies to show ya

I've been op shopping (that's what they call charity shops down here - Op Shops, Op for 'opportunity') and thought it about time I show ya'll what I gathered. I needed to op shop to help me get through that whole fire business.

This first pick is what I found the first day after the fires started. As DH and I drove to safety to his nephew's house I saw a sign that said "GARAGE SALE" and said I had to go!! DH obliged me.

The next two picks were op shops finds during our days coming and going from the house since we had to leave quite a few times because of threats to our area. We would return home once the threats were uplifted.

And this pic is of the stuff I got today. DH had a checkup at the doc's to make sure everything was going well after his catarct surgery. I am happy to report all is well and his eye is recovering well.

I especially love the fairies on the swing. Don't know how well you can see them in the pic, but I was pleased as punch when I found it!

Cait- There is an O.T. Bible verse that I pray for others and have quoted to my own family when massive trouble strikes, "10,000 shall fall at my left side, 10,000 shall fall at my right. But nothing shall come ny thee and thy dwelling." I've had to speak this into my husband's life as a blessing each day during all of the layoffs at work. Thus far he has been removed from any threat of being layed off. Going OP shopping was your way of showing faith that your dwelling would be preserved. It gave you a hope and belief for future 'building up' in your gardens and crafts. N.T. verse- "Call things even though they were not as though they were". Twelve step programs use "Fake it till you make it". It was healthy, faithfilled, and theraputic for you to T.S. and OP shop during those times of trouble. Good for you. Remember Nanna Grandma (Sylvia) did the same things after her diagnoses.
I would never find any of those blue and white cows around here, nor the calilily (?) tray. All of your finds were unique and a delirious joy to look at.

What will you do with the small chrystal bottles? I've got a couple of unmatched square ones and cant deside what to do with them. Thank you- Susie

Wow!! You did well! The blue vase is great & the little cows resting so cute. The cow creamer if it says Delft is worth at least $35 I used to have 1 & sold it for that! My uncle was a collector & wanted it!! A lot of people collect cow creamers!!The plate & mugs are great for breaking up for projects!! That basket is calling out for a lush trailing plant!! The fairies will look great in a fairy garden!! You have lots to work with, have fun!! Jan

I'm having the same trouble trying to plant Sunflowers and while I haven't seen them, I'm almost positive it is the squirrels. We don't have deer or rabbit. It might have been a groundhog, but he would have eaten a lot of things and made a huge mess. I've sown the seeds three times already. After the first set of seedlings disappeared [all but two] I sowed more seed and put hardware cloth down over the seed area and some of those edges were sharp. They still managed to get in between them a little but it looked like they gave up. But, to get back at me, they pulled out the two remaining sunflower seedlings that were about 6 inches tall already. After the second set of seeds germinated, I didn't want them to grow up through the wire, so I took it off and weeded around them. Back they came and did the same thing. So I've started the third bath which are already up. I've kept the wire covering on and bent it up a little to allow the sunflower seedlings a little room to grow. This time I am not going to weed around them because I think disturbing the soil at all, is a trigger for attracting them to the area. I even left the pulled sunflower seedlings right where they left them. If this doesn't work, I'm going to try using the netting I have over the strawberries, that seems to be working fine for the strawberries. Maybe that way I can get them to a decent size before they can get at them. I hope.

Chris, I planted only 4 seeds (Cap 1530) & the 1st one sprouted in 22 days with stuck seed cap that didn't survive surgery. The yellow 'halo' rings a bell. Think have seen in the past on tomato plants and was a fungus. Don't quote me though. John, Sowed 6 seeds of Rocoto Cuencano and so far a no show after 37 days. Shayne, C. cardinasii and C. eximium will cross with C. pubescens and is why some of us are growing. Once that is accomplished we could possibly cross the offspring with other species. jt

It must have been the luck of your Irish decor that you won the basket full of goodies! The napkin rings are perfect for Easter and that wreath can be used spring & summer! The handpainted tray would look great with a small teapot & cups on it for Easter! That cage, I had one exaclty like it some years ago, before the tablescape world entered my life, think I sold it at one of my garage sales. Karen, must admit, I have started my Easter decor, since I only have the small St. Pat's vignette in the middle of my table, I've started Easter everywhere else in the house! Oh my gosh, have been seeing bunnies with the blue delft all over the internet in vignettes & even stopped at a thrift store & Home Goods today looking for one. Home Goods had one table of Easter decor, just like Hobby Lobby, they are not carrying much stock at all for the holidays. If not for thrift stores & garage sales, I think we'd be out of luck right now for new things!!!

Hey Guys : Thanks for all the welcome backs. I pop in once in a while to help someone. Shaun , I'll try to find the Photo's . I had problems with my Computer. Many times before, I've said everyone makes a big deal about, " who's Pizza Dough is better." Basically they are all about the same, except for minor variations. You can't please everyone. Some like thin Crust and some like The thicker Crust like the Sicilian Pizza. I enjoy any kind as long as it is Crispy and Tender, not like a piece of rubber that wants to fight you. Of course it has to taste good too. Lou Here is the Pizza Dough Recipe : An alterative to baking on a stone is to use pans. A 12 inch round pizza will take from 8 to 12 ounces of dough. According to thickness you want. After the dough is made weigh it out and roll into balls. You will have to adjust the size of the ball to the thickness you like. Oil the pans and place a dough ball in the pan and flatten slightly, working the dough towards the side of the pan, with the palms. Then let it rest a few minutes. Repeat this every so often until the dough reaches the side and up, enough for a crust about inch. Let it raise slightly , pinch the dough all over, with a fork and put into the oven to bake at 400 deg. If it bubbles while baking pinch it with a fork again. When light tan specks show ,take them out onto a rack to cool fast. Then you can use them right away or freeze , to use later. When cooking the Pizza, place the Pre Baked dough back in the oiled pan , Or cook on your Stone. put a latel of sauce on the dough and swish it around, sprinkle some Parmesan or Romano , put it in the oven for a few minutes. Take it out and spread the topping of your choice and the Cheese Topping. A good topping cheese is a mixture of Mozzarella and Provolone chopped and mixed. The provolone gives it a good flavor and doesn't get like rubber when it cools. I use all Provolone. A little trick for baking. Keep a cup of water and brush handy, to baste parts that are cooking too fast. If you can get new metal pans, (uncoated) they have to be cured in the oven, so they won't stick. Coat them with oil and bake them for at least 6 hours. Never clean them with soap and water. Just rinse with water & wipe with a paper towel. Dough recipe: 1 cup of warm water (not hot) 1 Package of rapid rise yeast 1 tablesps sugar ,in a half cup of warm water 1/4 Cup of Veg. Oil 1 teasp.Salt About 3 1/2 cups Flour Â½ cup of Whole wheat flour or up to 1 cup Place in a mixing bowl, the Water, 1 cup of flour, wheat flour , yeast if risen Add the oil and salt and more flour. Add enough flour to make a soft ball of dough, that doesn't stick to your hands. Knead until smooth. Put it back in the bowl , Smooth side up and Rub on some Veg. Oil Cover and set in a warm place to rise until it doubles in bulk. I put it in a warm oven, Covered with a damp towel. It rises in about 1 hour. When doubled, punch it down and knead it well. Divide into Balls , about 11 to 12 ounces and place in oiled pans. 12" round Dough should be about 3/16 " thick on the bottom and about Â½" around the edge. For Sicilian Pizza , I used most of the dough in a 11" X 16" pan Follow the previous instructions. Good luck, Lou

Great pieces galore! Love those big flower plates. I see a tier cupcake plate made out of them. Cutie pies on the swing. Oooohhh to have such wings!

You found some really nice things, Cait! I especially love the blue decanter or vase or whatever it is. It's wonderful! So is the cow creamer!

Hide those sweet little fairies before Karen sneaks in and takes off with them! LOL

wow beautiful finds. I am gona go out in the yard at night and say " here fairys, here fairys, come to my house and bring your swing, here fairys. But it is such a distance they may hurt their little wings. Lots of good stuff.

Great finds, Cait...glad you could do something "normal!" I think somewhere I read blue & white kitchen project for you...so that big blue vase is awesome...and those cows should fit right in! Are you using the cups for mosaics? Plates? I love the lime green plate in the second pic...ah, heck, I love it all!

Wow Cait! So many wonderful treasures! And the fact that you found some of them during such a stressful time in your life will make them all the more special! Love the blue and white cows! And the fairies on the swing are just great! Can't wait to see what you make with all of them! Again, SO happy the fires are past and you are able to get on with life!

Everyone, including me, seems to love your cows!I have several cow creamers that were my Mothers, but none like yours.I was just looking at all the fairy houses and gardens and now you have the fairy swing for one! Lovely!

Susie, thank you so much for that thought-filled and prayer-full response. The blue vase and cows were bought the day after that Black Saturday and I remember thinking that if nothing else, I'm gonna have some 'junk'. I kept those things at my feet in the car for the entire 3 weeks the fires were threatening. I did find some comfort looking at them.

As for the glass bottles (I don't know if they're crystal or not - how can you tell?), I have been buying glass, oval plates because I want to make an oval totem and thought those guys would be perfect since they're also oval in shape. But I don't know how I'll put them together. I just keep buying glass for totems but haven't gotten around to making any.

Sunny - the cow creamer isn't Delft and one of its horns is chipped. I'm thinking of using it as a succulent planter for my kitchen window beeeecause....

Yes, Jeanne, the cows are perfect for my blue & white kitchen - that I will one day get to doing!

About 2 days ago I finally took those cows out of the car and pull out the stoppers to wash the grubby things and found that they were filled with salt & pepper. Can you imagine?! I don't think I'd sell shakers with s&p still in 'em.

In the last pic are two plates that have a blue tinge to them and I'll use them when I make a totem with the blue vase from the first pic.

Poured like crazy today... YIPEEEE!!!!... so haven't put the fairies in the Fairy garden yet. My Fairy house fell apart in the last wind storm we had so I also have that to fix, too.

Happy y'all enjoyed the 'junk'. I know how much I LOVE looking at everyone's finds and it's great to reciprocate!

Great finds, love the glass in particular the blue bottle. Its amazing how therapeutic "op shopping" is. Like the new way to describe our shopping too.

I think those great finds were God's way of smiling down on you during such a turbulent point in your life. And what a smile it is! Love the blue vase and cows. In one of my mosaic books ... not sure which one ... the author cut or chipped a cow pitcher similar to that in half and mosaiced it onto a rectangular mailbox along with a variety of other tesserae. It was so cute! I was wondering if you were going to use some of those finds for a mosaic. I can't wait to see what you will do with them! (Like send those cute little fairies to me- he-he)
