Please help me save my avocado tree!

I've grown a nice avocado plant from pit to about six feet tall, but lately I've become concerned about its health. Most of the leaves have dried, brown tips and several lower ones have fallen off. I had been watering it nearly daily but was concerned that I might be overwatering since this kept the soil moist at all times which I read could lead to root rot. So I decided to wait until the soild was dry before watering, but this doesn't seem to be helping any so far.

How can I know what the appropriate frequency/amount of watering is? Is there anything I can do to reverse this effect on the leaves?

Thanks in advance for any tips.
