Please, I need your help! What is wrong with my tree?
Comments (8)It's up to you if you want to keep it shorter or let it to to 10 + feet. But yes, definitely cut out all dead tissue back to good wood--you will know. (Your Aucuba still has enough foliage to recuperate.) By the way, if you think the particular site you have it is not good, you might be able to transplant it. Mine went through several transplants from house to house, site to site, until it reached it's final position. Looked for a place protected from subarctic winds, blazing sun, hungry deer which LOVE it, etc.. Found a location on the northwestern corner of the house, protected and watered by the outdoor shower area. I trim the bottom to keep the deer away and now they can't reach the foliage--even looks 'treelike'! Looks terrific now several years later but you should have seen it before I last moved it, with foliage sun burned from Winter sun, deer eaten and then the rot setting it. It started to recover almost immediately! I would say, here at least, they appreciate some protection from cold (and hot) winds, strong sun, adequate moisture and good ventilation. If per chance it does not make it, don't beat yourself up over it. Go out and buy another. Love these shrubs! Good luck! P.S., some sites advocate raised beds for Aucuba to facilitate drainage. Might be an advantage in Vancouver's chilly, wet Winter. --Here the winters can be much colder but lots of sun too so maybe that helps with drying out in the cold season....See MoreWhat is wrong with my avocado tree?
Comments (6)well.. apparently every other day was not enough ... a while back .. insert finger in soil.. and water when the soil is dry or hot .. and for all we know.. that might be twice a day ... not every other, when you dont forget .. is it properly mulched???? the buds and new growth [3 o'clock on the pic] look pretty good...so you are close ... but those leaves are lost .... just insure the new growth remains happy.. and you should be all set ... any green left on a leaf .... if thru the main artery.. is producing energy for the root system.. and helping that new growth... but a few leaves are nearly all brown.. just snip those off.. it will make it look a bit better ... good luck!!!! ken...See MoreHelp identifying what's wrong with my tree please!
Comments (13)I'm no expert but it looks like the tree is suffocating. It must have been planted too deeply to begin with then the mulch dressing is really finishing it off. If it were me I would remove the mulch and rake away some of the top soil almost to the point were the feeder roots are visible and as far out as the drip line. Then I would put a light top coating of wood chips (not shredded which could compact) over the top. This might seem drastic but you have nothing to lose since it looks like if you don't do something you'll probably lose the tree anyway. The tree looks like some kind of Poplar. Very pretty. I love the conical shape. Perfect for the space. It would be a shame to have to get rid of a tree like that....See MoreWhat's wrong with my avocado tree?
Comments (2)Looks like you have a very young tree that is responding to growing conditions in a small container; variable sun/shade, moisture, and nutrients. Avocado trees require years before fruit production begins, so you should prepare for the long term (5-7 years) with patience, and it is good you started with a grafted plant. It will have to be moved into larger containers with ample drainage as it grows; don't let it become root bound. Leaves turning brown at their tips may indicate too much water or wet feet. Also, have precautions in your Zone 7a winters, as freezing temperatures may affect your little Avocado, which would prefer at least a subtropical climate - recommended for Zones 9b-11. For more info, Google search "avocado (Persea americana)" but you won't be looking for Guacamole recipes yet. :)...See Morekramerlib
