Oh wow, I never thought about getting a two tiered shelf and cutting the bottom shelf out. It would be easy with wire cutters. Plus the shelves are so cheap!

I guess I must be losing it. I looked at the shelf (link below) and when I clicked on "Dimensions" it says it is only 8.5" high! And it's a double shelf.

Do you think they mean each shelf is 8.5? Nah, because they said it was the outside dimension.

My husband just said if he cuts out the bottom shelf then it would loose it's support. Makes sense.

It could become a little wobbly especially if heavy pots and watered. That is probably total height as compared to the width of 18.

One sheet of plywood he could build you a shelf ;)

And..he has a LOT of wood in his workshop too, and this way I could spray paint it.

You might think about a couple coats of Polyurethane to protect the wood from spills.

I'm pretty good at wiping up water, I usually water the plants at the kitchen sink.

He's making it as I type! I'll post a picture when it's all finished and set up. I hope it's not going to be too big. lol.

I went to Walmart this morning and bought one of those vinyl coated wire shelves that was in the link above. I'm going to use that for my smaller African Violets. But they are NOT strong enough to put a heavy potted plant on. So I'm glad you suggested a wood shelf! I doubt if he sands the corners, but I don't care, as long as it works, right?

I have a shelf that is like that, but has mesh instead of wires. It is almost 8 in tall, and about 18 in wide by 12 in deep. I got it from the Container Store. I'm not using it for plants, but my laptop sits on top of this, because it gets really hot otherwise. I feel like the extra ventilation space below it keeps it cooler. I have other shelf sizes from the Container Store as well, but I'm only using some of the shorter ones for plants because they won't fit on my shelves otherwise (I need the tiers.)

Here it is! I have more plants around the house so they'll probably get shuffled around.

Not sure if I'm going to paint it or not. I put some cushioned, non-adhesive shelf paper on the top and bottom. I think it's the right touch, but I may paint it later.

Thanks everyone! Quinn, that's a Begonia I'm wintering over. It will go back outside after the last frost. And it will need a good trim, too. :) But it did make a good houseplant and stayed in bloom all Winter. I might buy a new one (small) just for the house.

Oh, as far as the shelf and plants being "neat and tidy?" Give it a few days. lol. At least it made me clean the countertop! Would someone come dust the shutters for me? ;)

Forgot to add, he made that out of thick particle board instead of wood. The man has all sorts of wood out there from cherry to oak, and I get particle board??? lol
