I have tried most of the nurseries I could find online...

Do youknow of any that dont show up in the typical web search that have dwarf or semi drarf versions of:

Black Oxford - Calville Blanc - Cox Orange Pippin - Sops of Wine - Pink Princess - Pink Delight - Ashmeads Kernel

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

I should clarify: I am looking for these as apple TREES, bare root or potted. The bigger the better Thanks!

You can probably get a few at Miller Nurseries. Also look at Maple Valley Orchard.

I can tell you what has worked for me ... I'm not too far away from you in So Cal, either, so we have similar growing conditions. First, I will say that some cuttings are much more difficult to root successfully than others, and to a (sometimes frustrating) extent, every cultivar can be different. That said, I have had my best successes using the following methods: Callousing the cutting: 1. First, I look at what callous is or is not there already. Depending on the size of the cutting and the quality of the cut/callous (like, is the pith receding a lot? Have the cambium and pith pulled away from one another so there is a gap?), I may recut and re-callous the cutting. If the cutting is small, stressed, really wrinkly, etc., I will do my best NOT to recut, in order to preserve whatever energy is left in the cutting. If the cut looks messy, separated, etc., then I usually will recut. 2. After this step, I dip the end of the cutting in a rooting hormone (I use Clonex, others use Dip-N-Grow). Sometimes I wait for the latex to stop flowing (a few hours) before doing this if I have just recut. Other times, I'm lazy and don't wait. I'm not sure it makes a difference. 3. Then, I take a small plastic storage bin (I use one not much bigger than most cuttings. I got it at Target, I think) and fill it with fresh mulch, which is usually somewhat damp when you take it out of the bag for the first time. I bury the entire cutting in the mulch, and put a little more on top. I don't bother covering the plastic bin. 4. I leave it alone for approx 2 weeks. I have also tried wrapping the fresh-cut end in plastic wrap for a week (usually because I'm travelling with a fresh cutting) - this has worked, too, but I haven't done it enough times to say if it's better than the mulch method. Rooting the cutting: 1. I use coir from Gardener's Supply (Eco-coir potting mix), because it has been rinsed and is ready to use (just add water!): http://www.gardeners.com/buy/eco-co-coir-potting-mix/40-136.html If you use coir from some place else (like buying it in the reptile bedding section at PetSmart), be sure to wash it first to get rid of the salts in it. I follow the directions for prepping the coir, although I use a little less water than recommended. You want the coir to be pretty damp, but not so wet that water drips out when you squeeze it in your hand. 2. I then get a plastic baggie (quart size has worked fine for me), and fill it with approx 2/3 - 3/4 coir and 1/3 to 1/4 perlite. I don't measure, I just grab handfuls of each and mix them in the bag. 3. Stick the calloused end of the cutting in the bag! Leave enough space at the top for the bag to be sealed. I use cheap electrical tape to wrap the top of the bag. Be sure to press out as much of the air as you can before sealing the top. 4. I leave the bagged cuttings in the garage. They need heat more than light, and these super hot temps that we've been having have actually made the garage perfect for this. You should see some condensation in the bags after a bit - this is normal and is what you want. I've gotten roots as early as 1.5 weeks (from a really large cutting that I'd been trying to root for 18 months!!!), and other cuttings are slower, although I usually see something by 3-4 weeks. So far, though, everything has rooted, including a 3" Celadine tip that I bag rooted just to see what would happen. 5. After there are a lot of roots in the bag, I carefully cut the bag away and pot up, trying not to disturb the plant as much as possible. I water a little, then let the planting mix dry out before watering again. I put them in filtered light, too, since they've been in a dark garage for weeks. I really like bag rooting because you can see what's going on down there, and aren't just looking at leaf growth as an indicator of root growth. Who says you need 120k Btu furnace??? IF you are replacing a 25 year old 120k Btu unit, you most likely can install an 80k Btu furnace and get the same amount of heat. Have a manual J done to size the furnace properly. The MVB is a 2-stage furnace with an ECM motor.~ 94% AFUE The MTB is a 2- stage gas valve and a conventional blower ~93% AFUE. The MCB is a single stage furnace with a conventional blower. ~92% AFUE The MVB and MCB will be more tolerant of oversizing due to the 2-stage gas valves. But then you will have an MCB that is sized properly when the other furnaces are running on "Low". Do it right, you will always get what you pay for.

I think the point is that just because something dies on transplanting or doesn't seem to be doing as well as we'd like it isn't the end of the season by far. It happens all the time in gardening. New gardeners need to learn to accept that fact. And it in no way means a lost year of gardening. The title of this thread conveys a sense of panic, a plea for urgent , immediate help needed right this minute. Life and death is on the line! Such a situation very rarely exists in gardening and most of us know that. So for purposes of effective communication it's best to save such wording for those times in life when it is truly necessary. Say something along the line of "Help!! My 4 year old just pulled up my tomato plants! Please help me save them!" :-) <do you have any insight into the OP's question about drought stress, or lowering the watering or even giving more water, etc. at certain stages? I'd be very curious to know your input on this. I've always known that you water young plants like crazy, but don't over water older plants so the fruit doesn't crack and it turns out sweet and healthy and doesn't confuse the old plant into producing yet more flowers and young tomatoes...> Well I addressed it in part above but as I said since it is a second hand comment taken out of context I wouldn't put much stock in it either way. And since this is a topic often discussed over on the Growing Tomatoes forum - as is the debate on pruning and topping plants and their effects - I'm not going to rehash all the various opinions given. But my personal position is that do not believe in ever intentionally stressing plants for many reasons. Be that with water or unnecessary pruning/topping. In general both defeat the purpose of growing the plants in the first place and both are done almost exclusively due to a grower's lack of information or for the convenience of the grower, not the plant. Obviously there are exceptions to the pruning issue as it all depends on the (1) the type of plant as determinates are never pruned, (2) plant in ground or in container, (3) spacing used for planting and (4) the methods used to support the plant. But when proper plant spacing and support are used, when adequate soil prep is done on in ground beds, and when proper sized containers are used the only pruning needed IMO is of any branches low on the stem that would come into ground contact and/or any branches showing signs of disease. Anything more is stressful to the plant and should be avoided. And, those devoted to aggressive pruning/topping of all plants regardless of the listed considerations are always amazed to learn that the vast majority of growers do NOT prune. Clearly there are those who disagree with me and that's fine. All I ask is that they don't just jump onto any bandwagon without first trying at least a few of the alternative approaches. As to the water issue, IMO ideal growth and production of tomato plants requires consistent levels of moderate soil moisture at the root level. That doesn't mean wet, it means moist. It doesn't mean daily watering as some are determined to read it. It means checking the moisture level at the root level daily and adding water only if needed. It doesn't mean wet soil surface since you shouldn't be able to see your soil surface anyway if the plants are well mulched as they should be. I don't "water young plants like crazy" as that only stunts root development. They get what they need and no more. And I don't worry about cracking fruit since I always harvest at first or second blush/breaker stage. Cracking, pests, heavy rains, etc. isn't an issue that way so there is no need to withhold water from them at any time. Just some thoughts to consider. Dave

The main thing I would want to do is check the controls to see how user friendly they are for someone who might have deteriorating eyesight or dexterity. Even if she's fine now in a few years she could start to have challenges. Can she see the readouts and operate the touch controls? Are there a lot of menus/extra button pushes required? Are the controls far enough away from the burner for safety? To do that I would go to a large appliance store (e.g. big box, Sears, local) where there are lots of models to choose from and find a range that is relatively simple to operate.

If you could only get 2, Calville Blanc and Ashmeads Kernel are the prizes of those. Look at Kidd's Orange Red as a Cox alternative.

One Green World has some of them on m26.

I got 3 trees from them a few weeks back. They were small but I'd rather have small trees that haven't been headed and have viable buds lower on the truck, so they suited my needs.

thanks for the advice! I bought some red fleshed and gravenstein apples along with some cherries and some asain pears from OGW... they havent arrived yet. .. they have two of the other varieties I listed but not the rest... Grandpas doesnt have any of them, unfortunately.

Any other suggestions?

New Oleans:

David at Schlabach Nursery in Medinah NY listed a lot
of heirloom varieties on Bud 9. Not sure what he has left
but you can give him a call. Sorry but they do not use
internet being Amish. They do have a phone but will not take orders over the phone. Always happy to answer apple questions and availability over the phone however.

thanks spartan! I know the schlabacks and just picked up 15+ trees from them last week. Unfortunately they are almost sold out of everything this year and thus the posting I made

I just bought 4 trees from Burnt Ridge Nursery who were nice on the phone. Both Nurseries are very affordable.

I am still really looking for these three varieties in dwarf or semi-dwarf:

Black Oxford
Opal
Sops in Wine

any leads would be greatly appreciated

Is there some reason you don't like B9 rootstock? That's what Cummin's had the Ashmead's Kernel on. I also see Black Oxford and Sops of Wine on it at Maple Valley. I've got several trees on B9 and it has been a good balance between not too big and not too small (like M27).

If you want it on P2 or M26 instead, have you checked to see if Maple Valley can make you a benchgraft? It seems like they still have scion wood for both varieties and they do custom benchgrafts for $10.

Maple valley does not have any them- they have not updated their site in a long time, unfortunately.

Cummins doesnt list any of the varieties I am looking for now on their updated list

I really appreciate the help everyone!

If I could just get a BLACK OXFORD, I would be greatful. That and the new Opal are the 2 I really wanted this year, and despite planting 24 new trees this year, I cant find these two. (opal is liscenced only to certain growers and Black Oxford is just sold out everywhere)

St. Lawrence lists Black Oxford but they only use standard rootstock.

Just to put a bug in your ear.....

Keep an eye for Disease Resistance when look at those varieties.... Quite a few of the Very Old varieties have some pretty good resistance... but several are quite susceptible....

While Cox and Ashmead's are wonderful apples...
Neither is particularly disease resistant... and will likely die a painful/horrible/early death if you live in the East where Fireblight and other disease pressure is high....

I lost my Ashmead's Kernel this year to Fireblight... The 3-year old tree died to the ground.

Also... It's worthwhile to get what you can get now - but the shipping/planting season is quickly closing... I think put together your good list and make sure you can start ordering as soon as they start taking orders for Fall 2013...

Just a thought, St L's uses a russian standard rootstock, but it does not grow any bigger than most semi-dwarf trees. At least up in cold climates, not sure what it would do in warmer climes.

You might want to check with them and see how big their rootstock would get in your climate. It might fit your needs.
