Buying a new furnace ASAP --- need help Please !

hello,

I am installing a new furnace. I have been looking for a scratch and dent unit. I found a place that has Carrier brand scratch and dent units.

I need a 120,000 btu model I was told the 120 after the 58MVB is for btus ?

The company i found have the 3 models below.

58mtb120

58mcb120

Can someone tell me if the 58mvb120 is a good model? what the differences between the above models would be ? what the retail price would be on a new model? And would this model be ok/work for a 4 ton AC unit? (The ac unit is a Goodman)

The questions you have to ask yourself is, why do I need a new furnace?....Did the last one wear out prematurely because it was over-sized. Without a professional examining your duct system, I don't see how anyone can give you reliable advise that this is the system for your home....more factors come into place than just someone looking for a scratch and dent, in order to save a few bucks.

tinmantu has very good point. Most homes are oversized in heating just so the furnace can handle the ac load. You need to have a load calc done Manual J to see if this is the right furnace for your condition. Check this link below.

We recently bought a Frigidaire Gallery about that size but a bit shorter. Unlike most smaller refrigerators, it has glass (vs. wire) shelves and a split shelf so it can accommodate something really tall if needed. It also has adjustable shelves on the door and an adjustable shelf that spans the width of the freezer. Unfortunately, the Frigidaire web site doesn't show the interiors so we had to visit several stores. The features I mentioned were important to us, and we couldn't find another fridge to fit the wimpy dimensions we have unless we were to remove some cabinet trim. In a perfect world, we would have bigger crispers, but that would mean the compressor would be elsewhere. Where? Also, I wish the fridge were a bit quieter. The one we replaced was a smallish 6 year old GE bottom mount freezer which never got cold enough and was starting to give us problems. The freezer door would bounce open any time the fridge door was slammed.

Thank you for your replies. Yes Tiger it was authorized dealer. I know he wanted to put in 17" furnace cabinet & coil because my 24" closet(I know it would have to be dropped in from attic,not through closet door) and said it would be hard to repair and service if 21". However the Goodman guy didn't complain about the size of closet. Goodman guy, said the HP with dual fuel would be nice, but it would take getting use to a cooler heat with HP, until gas heat kicked on, since we are use to gas heat. I will call AS guy back and ask about the other sizes. I will also get another AS guy out here. I feel that I really need a load test, esp. since when I look @ AS stuff, alot of what you suggested is either 3 or 4 ton, not 3.5 ton which is what I have. Back in 1996, when my a/c went out, they put in carrier with a bigger coil, no test done then either. I think the orginial was a Rheem 2.5 or 3 ton. I want to get this right and hopefully have it last 25 yrs up. What is you opinion on the Goodman? Rheem? Carrier? Also which is cheaper, HP or AC, with gas heat? I might be willing to try HP, hubby NOT. Thanks guys.

The fact this HVAC contractor is pushing another thermostat leads me to believe he is not going to be happy about installing the Infinity controller. Keep us up to data how this goes. FYI - your quote should list the model numbers of everything that is being installed. If he wants to call the furnace the Carrier "Deluxe" then that's fine. His marketing names don't mean anything. What is important is the model number. There is another furnace above the 59TN6. I guess he would call that the "Super Deluxe". :)

I don't have the same LG model as you are looking for but have an LG 3 door French version that we bought new in July 13. It was a replacement for a 20 year old side-by-side so I admit that I was captivated by the interior lighting and more efficient configuration. However, I would not buy an LG again for these reasons: - ice maker is always jammed; when this happened the first time a few months after purchase, a repair person came out and "fixed" it. The fix lasted for a few weeks and since then has not worked. Seems like this is a known problem. It makes ice but the ice gets stuck and frozen into the dispenser. To remove the clogged ice is a physical effort of pulling and digging and creates a huge mess of crushed ice everywhere. Note that I have diligently followed the tips from the repair person to keep it working, to no avail: avoiding the crushed ice mode and dispensing ice at least once a day. - in less than 3 years I have had to replace a side door compartment and two crisper drawers. These cheap plastic parts crack very easily under normal wear and tear. - the freezer consistently creates frost build up and freezer burn on the food. - getting a repair person from the LG website is a huge hassle. Their website is glitchy and not user friendly at all.

Who says you need 120k Btu furnace??? IF you are replacing a 25 year old 120k Btu unit, you most likely can install an 80k Btu furnace and get the same amount of heat. Have a manual J done to size the furnace properly.

The MVB is a 2-stage furnace with an ECM motor.~ 94% AFUE
The MTB is a 2- stage gas valve and a conventional blower ~93% AFUE.
The MCB is a single stage furnace with a conventional blower. ~92% AFUE

The MVB and MCB will be more tolerant of oversizing due to the 2-stage gas valves. But then you will have an MCB that is sized properly when the other furnaces are running on "Low".

Do it right, you will always get what you pay for.

I agree with all the others who have replied

Hunting around looking for a 'scratch and dent' unit to save a few bucks is really false economy

When you consider the cost of the fuel the furnace will burn in it's lifetime, getting a brand new one professionally matched to your home's needs will surely save you twenty times as much savings in the long run as your improperly sized scratched/dented unit will

It's like the guys above said.

In this case SIZE DOES MATTER...( no pun intended..hehe)

I went from a 125 BTU to a 40 first stage and a 40 2nd stage Amana furnace and air with the 92.5 eff VSF.

It cut my bills in 1/2 ..but because my 90 year old mom like the heat at 74 ... the bills are still too high.
Yes this spring I'm insulating. That should cut another half off of the bills. ( It's like Florida all the time )

You need to get the right furnace.
