All 2 stage furnaces require 2 stage thermostats for best operation. otherwise you will always be on high stage whether needed or not. What was quoted?

I'm having a hard time making out the writing, but appears to be:
1) Amana AMVE96060 $5745 (+tax)
2) Carrier TN6OA60 $5595
3) Amana Distinctions GMVC96960 $4795

All are 2 stage. All have 5 yr labour/ 10 yr part warranty

House is 3 storey: living rm, kitchen and dining on main
2nd floor : family room with 2 bdrm
3rd floor: master bdrm
Basement finished with home office for husband. I work from 2nd floor.
We spend most time in offices, family room in evening
There is just 1 thermostat: on main floor.

I find this a little suspicious. Do you know what part he replaced and what readings were too low?

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in the house? If not then get one ASAP.

The Carrier model number is not correct. Could it be the 59TN6A060? How many square feet is the house and is it attached on either side. A 60K BTU furnace seems a bit small of Ontario. What is the closet major city? I would like to look up the winter design temperature.

We live in a Oakville (Toronto)
Very cold here now!
House is 2086 spread over 3 floors (excl basement)
It's fully detached( but very close to neighbours ... City living!)

Parts per million of carbon monoxide readings were too high and as per provincial regulations, he couldn't touch it. It's repair ( costly for 14-15 yr old ' builders special" furnace or start new.
We do have CO detectors... One built into smoke detector on 3rd floor and 1 plug in on 2nd floor.
We also gave 2 gas fireplaces: 1 in kitchen/ dining area on main floor and another on 2nd floor in family room.

You failed to answer my question on thermostats.

I would prefer a correctly sized Carrier Infinity 59TN6, I would think an 80 K size. How are your typical winters.

Carrier TN6 will require the Infinity controller, was that quoted? It should have been.

We have just 1 thermostat on main floor... I don't recall any discussion on adding add'l.
We are dealing with Direct Energy... Sales appt booked in another 1/2 hr!

FYI, we had service call in Dec and were told there were issues with our furnaces in this development and other newer communities nearby... Inexpensive builder units.we don't want to get into all new HVAC system.

The winter design temperature for Toronto is 1 degree F. I don't think a 60K BTU furnace is going to be enough for a 2086 sq. foot house.

Do you know the size of the current furnace?

Ask the salesman if a heating load calculation will be done. If not, have him explain how the size was picked. HVAC contractors tend to want to over size equipment. It is a little unusual to see a quote for an undersized furnace. Was there any discussion about the duct work being too small to handle a bigger furnace?

2 stage furnaces are a waste if the correct 2 stage thermostat or controller is not installed. Hope you are listening.

Need to decide on carrier vs amana. Amana has best warranty apparently

Carrier comes with a 10 year parts, lifetime heat exchanger warranty. The Carrier labor warranty is one year. Anything above that is supplied by the dealer or a third party warranty company. Longer warranty does not necessarily mean a better product.

Should have said option 3 out.
We went with the Carrier. Also receiving 250 rebate from ON gov't and $800 from Mfr as existing furnace had known issues and Carrier would provide the rebate with new.
Model is Carrier 59TN6A060V17.
5 yr labour/ 10 yr part
Going with Emmerson Sensi therm. as we both travel and can control remotely. Install is tomorrow.

Bad choice on thermostat.

Luv it when homeowners come on this site for help and advice but can't follow it. Why cripple a nice premium furnace with the wrong controller.

Carrier offers a wifi matching Infinity thermostat/controller. It is pricey but the only one I would want with that high end furnace.

Yes the Infinity controller without wifi is still the better choice. The wifi is nice, but not necessary in my opinion.

Just quickly talked to sales... I asked about changing to Carrier...he may have misunderstood what I was looking for...
He said Emmerson sensi works very well with carrier or amana furnaces.

He's stopping by our place later as left behind a book this am. We will nail down then...
Options are:
Emmerson Sensi
Carrier ' standard' ( whatever that is.....)
Carrier wifi which will cost us additional ??? Don't know that amt yet. Husband likely won't want to pay any more and gas left me to decide. Joy, lol

Ok... So I just took a look at Carrier controllers on- line.
The 1 he'd shown us before the Emmerson was def. not the Carrier 'Infinity' model ( wifi or otherwise)
It looked like a standard/ basic white controller.

With the furnace we've chosen, we should pay the extra $ ( guessing a few hundred) for an ' Infinity' controller. ( wifi or not.... Just get the Infinity over comfort/ performance controller.)

You want the Carrier Infinity controller. The Carrier "standard" could be something else. If you want the wifi get the Infinity controller with wifi. Don't let him talk you into anything else.

To be honest, I don't see Infinity' written anywhere on the paperwork.
All I see is furnace model: Carrier Deluxe 59TN6A060V17-14.
Thermostat just says wifi upgrade, but I do know it's the Sensi. (We'd inquired about Nest before all of this...)
Picking a paint color is so much easier:)

The fact this HVAC contractor is pushing another thermostat leads me to believe he is not going to be happy about installing the Infinity controller. Keep us up to data how this goes.

FYI - your quote should list the model numbers of everything that is being installed. If he wants to call the furnace the Carrier "Deluxe" then that's fine. His marketing names don't mean anything. What is important is the model number.

There is another furnace above the 59TN6. I guess he would call that the "Super Deluxe". :)

It sounds like most people are fans of Carrier furnaces. I will have to investigate them further. My heating system is not working, and I suspect that it needs to be replaced. A repair service is coming on Monday, but I am not holding out much hope. My furnace is 30 years old, and it is time to retire the poor thing.
