Please help with quotes on new a/c & furnace

Please help me. I have 24yr Rheem gas furnance(RGDA100E GR)and 14yr old Carrier(38TRA042) 3.5 ton a/c with Superior Coil V1042. System is fine, however my condensor line clogged and leaked, repair man told me my coil was rusting out time for new one. Seeing as my system is not energy eff. and old, I plan to replace all. No manual J done. House is 1973 ranch 1800sf. including 18x18 vaulted ceiling FR. I live in west-central GA. Husband resealed ducts last fall. I've had a few estimates. My furnace&coil sit in hallway closet that is 23 1/5" wide. Please help.

GOODMAN-GME80905cx furnance, CAPF4860CB coil, SSX160421 Condensor, thermastat,lineset,cover Matching system with AHRI#. I'm not sure of either one. Can a 21"wide furnace go into my closet? I like the idea of a matched system. I want the best bang for my buck, efficiency, cooling . The Goodman guy also will add another vent to FR. I have 2 now. Please help, it's so confusing. Don't bother with an Allegiance 15 if you are getting standard furnace. Just go for Allegiance 13 or get a furnace with high efficiency blower motor to get more efficiency.

Nobody suggested a heat pump for dual fuel? GA climate is good place for it.

For servicability & installation ease, 17.5" furnace sure is nicer.

Baldloonie is correct. The furnace called the Freedom 95 is 95% eff, sgl stg, with conventional blower motor.

You would be wasting your resources pairing with the Allegiance 15 AC because this condenser could never achieve its capability in a system like this.

If this was my home, I would look at the XV95 or AmStd equivalent. This is a two stg 95% eff var speed furnace. Another choice would be the XV80 or Am Std equivalent paired with a heat pump.

I would be careful about installing a non matched system because of your space requirements. A reputable dealer would not do this.

I would get another dealer for advice.

This is a very nice system. You will not be disappointed assuming it is installed correctly. Did the salesman do a real Manual J calculation on his laptop or did you write some numbers on a piece of paper? In NJ you will need a Manual J and Manual S calcualtion in order to qualify for the Cool Advantage rebate. Ask for a copy of the report. Do you need an electronic air cleaner? The Carrier 4 inch media filter works well. Is is less expensive and no maintenace. Is the Carrier 10 year labor warranty included? What are your plans for the second floor HVAC system? If it is the same age then consider getting a quote ro replace both. You should be able to negotiate a better price on two systems.

I don't think they're replacing the lineset. He's just going to drop the new system in the same place, and use the same lines as the existing. There is a kink in the existing copper tube going to the evaporator and he's going to replace a section of that. We didn't talk about a filter cabinet, he's just going to replace the existing grill on the ceiling with ones using latches and the filter goes in there. I don't know the sizing of the existing furnace, I believe the AC is 4-ton. I'll need to look more when I get home, but the furnace looks quite old. They both still heat and cool the house fine, its just loud....

Dumaspup, most likely this is due to a poor installation and not the equipment itself. Johnnywhit, not a bad system. Was a load calculation done to determine sizing? Was the ductwork examined to determine proper supply and return amounts? With that price tag, I sure hope so. Price is higher than what I would expect. Definitely get 2-3 quotes. See if you can get a quote on a Carrier Infinity system. It is a 2-stage system, which means first stage cooling has a lesser capacity and thus runs longer to remove more humidity. $2k is not a bad price for that furnace, but you might want to consider a more efficient 90+ model. It's up to you. PVC venting might be an issue and add more to the cost. I would also suggest asking for the Honeywell VisionPRO IAQ thermostat, which can slow the blower down to dehumidify on demand if configured properly. It's a nice thermostat (not that the Lennox one would be bad) and is a good choice for an upper-end system. See what your dealer thinks about it. Ask him if the Lennox thermostat can slow down the blower to dehumidify on demand.

Thank you for your replies. Yes Tiger it was authorized dealer. I know he wanted to put in 17" furnace cabinet & coil because my 24" closet(I know it would have to be dropped in from attic,not through closet door) and said it would be hard to repair and service if 21". However the Goodman guy didn't complain about the size of closet. Goodman guy, said the HP with dual fuel would be nice, but it would take getting use to a cooler heat with HP, until gas heat kicked on, since we are use to gas heat. I will call AS guy back and ask about the other sizes. I will also get another AS guy out here. I feel that I really need a load test, esp. since when I look @ AS stuff, alot of what you suggested is either 3 or 4 ton, not 3.5 ton which is what I have. Back in 1996, when my a/c went out, they put in carrier with a bigger coil, no test done then either. I think the orginial was a Rheem 2.5 or 3 ton. I want to get this right and hopefully have it last 25 yrs up. What is you opinion on the Goodman? Rheem? Carrier? Also which is cheaper, HP or AC, with gas heat? I might be willing to try HP, hubby NOT. Thanks guys.

BTW, what size furnace are you replacing?

let me offer some suggestions in keeping with the same 17.5" footprint as the XR95/Freedom 95 furnace that you were quoted.

I would look at the XV95 80K model or XV80 80K model. Both of these Trane furnaces are available ib the AmStd model.

AUD080R9V3K 3 41,600 64,000 40.0 17.5 28.0 (80%)

both are two stg mdls/var speed blowers, 17.5" footprint and will accept 3 1/2 ton condensers. only the 95% will qualify for tax credit.

Tiger, the old furnace I'm replacing is a Rheem RGDA100CER 100,000BTU. I really want a matching system on a/c & coil. Do you see any problems with putting in a 21" furnace with 21" coil on top in my 23.5" closet. I have had a Trane & AS give me quotes as above, however they stuck to 17" coil &furnace and the systems were not matched only the 95% furnace was eligible for tax credit. I think what I'm looking for is matched a/c & coil and furnance VS so I can get full tax credit and a efficient system. Should I try the Goodman, or Carrier? Sorry for being a pain. Thanks
