Troubles with my Majesty palm! Do I have a chance?
Comments (7)Sorry to hear about your majesty palm. They are definitely one of the worst indoor palms you can grow, they just don't like being indoors and people don't even always have success with them indoors for just the winter. They are very prone to spider mites, need humidity (but oddly do well in non-humid environments outdoors), and they are grown in a way that makes them do terrible once they leave the store. I don't think that leaving the door open would have hurt your palm, they can actually handle some freezing temperatures and usually don't die until they reach temperatures in the upper 20s and I'm sure it didn't get that cold in your house in only 8 minutes. I would look for a different indoor palm. Parlor palms are just as available and do much better. They are smaller though. Traditionally, Kentias, Lady palms, and pretty much any palm in the Chamaedorea species do incredibly well indoors. Sorry to hear about this palm. It's definitely still alive and it probably will grow back if you keep giving it good care like you have. I would take it outside in the shade after your last frost, it will be happier outdoors for the summer and recover faster. -Alex...See MoreIs This Root Rot on my Majesty Palm?
Comments (5)Normally a Majesty palm (Ravenea rivularis) will take full sun and as much water as you can give it. The record-breaking temperatures would stress any plant. Move the plant away from the glass while the weather is hot -- it is likely the reflected glare that toasted the frond tips. I'm not sure about the darkening of the stalks -- that could be sunburn. That could occur if the plant just came out of a greenhouse, but it will adjust. Most problems show themselves in the leaves first, and except for the one scorched leaf, the leaves look fine. Soil should be pressed firmly around the rootball to avoid air pockets. Check to be sure drainage is good. Keep soil damp, but not soggy. In Madagascar, this palm will grow alongside rivers and IN shallow ponds, so it will be difficult to overwater it. Most people do not give them enough water. Ordinarily one would not include garden dirt in a potted mix. You never know what's in it and it can tend to be heavy. However, unless it was a large portion of the potting mix, don't disturb the plant by repotting again. Later, when the palm is better established in the pot, you may lightly fertilize it, and continue fertilizing periodically until temperatures become much cooler and growth pauses for winter. Then ramp up again in spring. A well grown specimen will develop a very fat trunk base over time. And it's not really a houseplant in Los Angeles -- feel free to plant outdoors when it outgrows the pot. Enjoy your palm!...See MoreHelp! My Majesty Palm dying by the hour
Comments (2)Agreed, I live in zone 2b so there are only about three months of the year when the weather is good for outdoor palms. I did have her outside for quite a bit before the repotting and when she was inside I had her in my living room which is basically all windows. I definitely will not be getting any new Majesty palms after this one but I'm really concerned about the pests because I do not want them to continue killing the palm and/or spreading to my other plants....See MoreHelp save my indoor potted Majesty Palm!!
Comments (2)These big potted tropical plants presented at warehouse stores and similar outlets often come from outdoor production operations in climates where this is possible, may have problems continuing on when stuck in ordinary household interiors - you should look up majesty palm and see if it is even considered suitable for house plant use at all (not all tropical plants are, with many of them requiring greenhouse conditions to live in cold climates)....See Morejeannie7
