Sorry to hear about your majesty palm. They are definitely one of the worst indoor palms you can grow, they just don't like being indoors and people don't even always have success with them indoors for just the winter. They are very prone to spider mites, need humidity (but oddly do well in non-humid environments outdoors), and they are grown in a way that makes them do terrible once they leave the store.
I don't think that leaving the door open would have hurt your palm, they can actually handle some freezing temperatures and usually don't die until they reach temperatures in the upper 20s and I'm sure it didn't get that cold in your house in only 8 minutes.
I would look for a different indoor palm. Parlor palms are just as available and do much better. They are smaller though. Traditionally, Kentias, Lady palms, and pretty much any palm in the Chamaedorea species do incredibly well indoors.
Sorry to hear about this palm. It's definitely still alive and it probably will grow back if you keep giving it good care like you have. I would take it outside in the shade after your last frost, it will be happier outdoors for the summer and recover faster.

Generally an optimist, but this does not look too good. Much more to this than being near an open door. They do have a reputation for being temperamental indoors so don't feel that bad. It was not due to overwatering. This is one palm which I recommend leaving in a saucer with a bit water for near constant moisture. I know, it goes against everything you have heard, but it's true. That's how I have finally kept one happy, indoors, over the winter. These palms tend to go into a decline without a lot of water. They are also heavy feeders when healthy and growing.

Thank you for the feedback. If I would know that Majesty palm is one of the worse indoor plants, I certainly won't buy it! I'll just keep do what I'm doing for a while and see how it goes, although, I'm not expecting that much of improvement!

I'm wondering how cold it was when you brought the palm home and exposed it to cold going from the store to your cold car and then again from your car to your house. If you've had temps anything like we've had in Michigan, it probably saw single digits or low teens, even for a short period.

The latin name of the Majesty palm is Ravenea rivularis. The last part of the name (rivularis) means river dwelling, so I agree with Njoasis in that overwatering was likely not what caused the palm's decline. In nature, these grow along river banks, and are sometimes submerged for extended periods of time.

Years ago I bought several Majesty palms for indoor planters without doing any research. The palms eventually started declining, so I planted them outdoors without expecting them to survive a winter season. Much to my surprise, they've been going strong since then planted outdoors, even in a dry climate like the one we have in Central, inland California.
