MajestyPalm- broken fronds, do I cut off?

Hi all. I bought 2 majesty palms before I did an internet search and found out how they are not exactly the best choice! Anyways, I have them in large pots on a covered open air patio, facing the south. They get full sun for the afternoon only. I've been trying to water and fertilize them alot according to what I've read.

One looks good, but the other had basically all the large fronds snap and bend over towards the top of each frond, so they are just hanging down, droopy like, not looking happy at all. Should I cut these off where they are bent? My Palm needs plant Viagara...

Also- I left the drain plug in the bottom of each pot thinking I'd take them inside for the winter, and didn't want a mess inside. Is this a bad practice? So hopefully everyone won't tell me to buy another one, I want to save Mr. Droopy!! THANKS!!!

Hi hevykevy420. You can cut them off where they bend or at the base of the frond. Whichever. Although some people here say don't cut any living green off. Since its just a Majesty I think it'll be OK this time. I've learned if you buy a Majesty Palm don't get too attached to it. They can be a pain.

About the drain hole. Unplug it now and throw the plug away. Get a drip tray for when its inside. Just water it in the shower or outside, let it drain and set it on the tray when its finished. I hope Mr Droopy can get it back up in the future. LOL! Good luck!

BTW. Heres what I'd do with it. LOL!

Thanks for the info Josh Palm Crazy! I'll get rid of those drain plugs. Well after much consternation I've decided to trim those sagging fronds per your suggestion. It just does not look good with Mr. Droopy sporting the sag so much IMHO. If he can't get it up quicklike then I will follow your suggestion and file Mr. D in the circular file... sniff...sniff... 'tear... weep :_(

Majesty palms dont really like being indoors for the most part. They can sucessfully stay indoors but they must be misted if your house is dry, and watered pretty well. My majesty palm looks pretty healthy except that the newest frond might not be opening fully. Im getting a little concerned, but Im going to buy a water spritzer and hopefully it will hang in until spring. Good luck! -Alex

I agree, cut off all the plants and soak it with a hose to get rid of remaining spider mites. Neem oil is suppose to help too. Ive used it on aphids and the first time it didnt work that well but it was better the second time. Also keep the plant outside and water well. Try not to put it in full sun. These are strong plants so they can handle neglect pretty well. By the end of the summer they should look pretty good but dont be surprised if the spider mites do return when it goes indoors. NO. This is a common practice and I hate it. A Queen Palm looks beautiful with a full crown of fronds. Here in L.A, I've seen unbelievable Queens bursting with healthy fronds, but I've also seen over trimmed Queens with two fronds and it looks really stupid. The problem is uneducated gardeners and lack of instruction and training. I've seen no evidence that cutting fronds off a Queen Palm induces speedy growth. It's a palm, and all palms prefer to have a full head of fronds. I have two Queens and I told my gardeners, do not cut anything off unless I tell you to. If they keep doing this you will see thinning of the trunk. Don't let this happen again. Good luck!

My apple tree is bearing some translucent apples that are meaty and good. I probably should have trimmed it but i did it 1.5 years ago and i planned to do it in the fall of this year. Anyway the neighbors tell me the branch broke (from the weight of the apples) and they partially cut through it to move from a raised garden. Almost all Palms are particularly sensitive to the residual salts that are found in drained water. After watering, make sure that all the water has drained completely. If the pot regularly sits on a saucer filled with this water you can pretty much be guaranteed that at the minimum, leaf tips will all turn brown.
