You know, it's very hard to spray when Fate doesn't cooperate.

If it's not raining or threatening rain, we seem to have tropical storm force winds blowing. I really need to get a spray on, it's petal fall on cherries, plums, peaches. (Gave up on apricots, I don't think they set much of anything).

We've had tremendous winds the past 3-4 days, sustained around 30-35, gusts 40-50 mph.

Can't spray in that. Praying for some better weather this week.

I mentioned in a different thread, but my trees have entered some kind of suspended state. Blossoms that have opened weeks (about 70%) ago still have petals. Blossoms that have partially opened have stayed that way. Bees are still buzzing around, so I don't want to spray.

I've got 2 different size sweet cherries...some that are "big" and some that are very small, on the same tree... I doubt the small ones (which there are many) ever get going...but who knows.

My peaches haven't done anything in a couple weeks.

The remaining apricots have gained in size.

I'm also especially fond of male marmalaids. I've owned 3 in my lifetime. Psycho - Well, the name explains it. He was far from mild-manered, but I loved him. K.C. Farnsworth - He was a lazy spoiled brat, but fairly mild manered. He was my baby when I was growing up. I got him the day that Psycho died. I was 10 and wanted to "replace" the kitty that had just died. Well, we had K.C. until I was in my first semester of college. We had to put him down. He had seizures for about 5 years and they just kept getting worse and worse and he was getting weaker and weaker. :-( Then, a few months after I moved out on my own, my mom called one night and said, "Your daddy wanted me to call you and tell you that you need to come and get this kitten that Mrs. Cooper (old neighbor lady) found in her yard." And the rest is history. The Dude is now around 11 years old, and totally an old grump. He's lived with my parents for about the past 8.5 years, as Keith is allergic to cats. So, he's a block away and lives with his "uncles" Stanley (HUGE black and white fatty), Henry (HUGE gray tabby fatty) and The Beast (young, annoying brat) LOL The Dude hates them all, except Stanley. Stanley is "special" and so The Dude tolerates him.

If a new plant was kinda wimpy and showing some BS, I might spray it lightly to help it along, but by the time it puts out an actual bloom and new leaves, I generally hold off a bit on spraying so that I can determine how disease-resistant it will or won't be in my garden. Of course, I have sometimes had a plant that stayed wimpy the first couple years--they needed help for that time with BS, but by the 3rd year they took off and I held off on spraying. However, most roses will start putting out stronger growth at least in a couple months after being planted in your garden. (NOTE: The plants I'm talking about were called disease-resistant by multiple sources--I don't buy them otherwise.) Two things I've learned about spraying my roses. 1) Most of my roses only need a couple sprays in the springtime and a couple times in the fall. They are, indeed, quite disease-resistant. Only about 8-10 of my roses need more spraying in the springtime and fall--maybe 4 times each. 2) When it gets really hot (July and Aug) I don't usually need to do any spraying. It's too hot for BS to develop in most cases. Your conditions may be different than mine, but my point is, find out which ones need more or less spraying, and then limit your spraying only to those that really need it. Don't spray everything just because a spray was scheduled for that day. Hope you can make sense out of all of that. LOL Kate

Drjoann, from reading your OP and from seeing what you've been writing in other threads, here are my ideas for you. "Is a cutlery tray a big deal? " Top rack, for cutlery: a great thing. Now that the patent has expired, any DW manufacturer can put it in their models. Suddenly now, they no longer "dis" it. People who have it say it is good. Before you run your next DW wash cycle, you can actually leave the cutlery in the rack for a long time and not worry about emptying it like a basket requires. Two years ago when I studied this topic, I found the 18" Miele could come with two of these racks so one can just slide the full clean rack into a shallow drawer and not even have to unload it. No other DW had this at that time. I got a cheaper DW in the end but I'm still envious. "What are we missing if we get a modern, quiet DW, but don't go for the TOL ..." Hmmm, hard to be objective about this. If you are willing to be a proud driver of a VW (like, say, a Rabbit) instead of feeling you need or deserve any other more expensive Deutsches Auto, you have already answered this question. Wherever you are, there is bound to be one store or small chain that gives great deals to people who call, email, or show up and say they are dealhunters in every way. I found a great deal this way. I said "any DW, reasonably modern and quiet" . I was also buying other appliances. When I returned 9 months later I got a deal on another purchase. It all worked well, and my DW criteria might have been just the right starting point. The cost accountant in each company has to allocate costs based on a number of factors that have no correlation to the user experience in terms of dB(A) or drying or cleaning. A model that has not been re-worked will not have associated R&D costs to recuperate, so its distributor cost will be low. How will you know? Never can. Just declare yourself as the low-cost buyer you will be. Any DW, that is mid-range and quiet. If you want heated drying, it will have a steam vent in front. If you want condensating drying, it will not vent steam in front, it will be "greener" and take more time to finish a wash. I think DW technology is mature now so there is no compelling reason to spring for the highest price DW's. hth

John, You are 100% right, the Box is just a mini Computers and are subject to everything a normal computer is (Lockups, freezes, resetting etc...). Sometimes you do need to replace the box ifthe same problem persists. This will happen on my box whether I have anything on the DVR or not. It is very temperamental and will something do it's own thing. There are times none of the Buttons work (on the remote or on the box itself). I usually have to unplug the box and let it set for a while (resetting it). My real problem is with all the Trips I've made to Comcast exchanging equipment. I recently replaced 2 Cable Adapter Boxes and my Modem/Router. The Modem/Router was the 6th in a year. Once I was home and all hooked up one of the Cable Adapter Boxes didn't work correctly and neither did the Modem/Router. I ended up having Comcast come out this time and they found nothing wrong! I packed up the Modem/Router and took them back again to Comcast. They Replaced the Cable Adapter Box with the same model. The Modem/Router, well I requested a Modem this time with no Router. I decided to use my old Linksys Router. I now have everything working except for the Cable Box in the front room (it had a bunch of stuff on the DVR my daughter recorded). I couldn't return the box for fear of being killed by my daughter (would have lost all her recordings)(maybe next time).

The wind finally settled down here in South Ga so I sprayed today about five gallons of captan. I sprayed just Captan but I wanted to tank mix Triazicide with the captan but got scared with the temperature on the rise. I'll wait and spray the Triazicide in a couple of days.

BTW, of late after my pump quiets picking picking up in the tank, I add a more water then use that to spray my roses. A good use for tank wash seems like.

Usually good spray weather coincides with the appearance of the insects you need to protect against- the warm still days. I've never had weather prevent me from protecting all the orchards I manage and they take a week of decent spray conditions to cover. As long as you understand how much rain will wash things off and how long it takes for pesticides to set, one orchard shouldn't be too hard.

Harvestman - the orchards you manage are probably laid out in a sensible manner, with apples next to apples, peaches next to peaches. Whereas we idiotic home growers will plant a peach next to an apple, then have to try to spray the one without killing the bees just starting to gather on the other, a few feet away.

Well, it isn't that I absolutely COULDN'T spray in the conditions we've had, its just that it becomes an extremely unpleasant task in 40 mph, cold wind. I've done it enough times to know I don't enjoy getting a face full of spray blowing back at me.

ltilton -- lol, that's me, tucking things into spots where I think they'll fit -- hmm, let's see, a standard apple won't fit there, but a peach will .... that's me.

Yeah, that sounds like me too. I have my columnar peach tucked into a spot surrounded by azaleas and Korean spice viburnum - all in full bloom right now, when I need to protect my young peaches. I sprayed on a still morning, being careful to aim away from the flowers. Then I took about five buckets of water and washed down the nearby shrubs and flowers.

I can't spray in strong winds either. I bet you don't have any PC scars yet and they won't show up until the wind subsides.

Den, my point is that during periods where spraying is not tenible, insect activity tends to be low. The message was intended to give hope (not to brag at your expense) because I know how crazy it can make you trying to get spray down in difficult conditions. I don't sleep a lot in early spring- believe me, but if I only had a couple hours of spraying to do it wouldn't be too difficult.

RW, nearby flowering shrubs can be covered with tarps.

I saw PC egg laying scars yesterday on one apricot tree. I had some nice weather over the weekend. They looked fresh.
