How do I Prevent Fruit?

Carole Westgaard

Am I nuts or did I hear of some method of preventing a crabapple tree from bearing fruit? It's about 18 years old and I'm sick of raking them up before they become applesauce. I know there are germination inhibitors for various flora, but don't know much about fruit-bearing trees; e.g. are they wind-pollinated dicots like beech and oak or are they heterotrophic. Or does this matter? My thinking is that if the blossoms and resulting fruit are dependent upon cross-pollination, I'm ready to chop one sex down. Certainly, there must be a spray? You won't hurt my feelings if you tell me I'm nuts ... I'm a Hosta freak, so fruit trees I don't know. And this tree I can't sacrifice to the woodpile because I need the shade!

Thanks for any insights.
