The internet is great in one way, and terrible in others.

A new scam has hit the net.
The story was on June 18th, 2013 NBC news.

What happens is a picture of 'child porn' appears on the screen.
Seconds later an FBI webite, 'fake' pops up. The site looks official.
Instructions say, 'you're looking at child pornography. You can either go to court or pay a fine.' The fine is 400-450.00.'
Here's the clincher. 'To those who have cameras.'
The scammers figured a way to show your picture via your camera, so it appears on your screen.

People have been fooled and paid a fine via credit cards.

If a picture of child porn appears on your screen, turn off your computer and for God's sake, don't give your cc or Paypay account. .

According to the newscaster, he said, 'they believe the hackers are overseas.'
However, they didn't name which country.

I don't understand how hackers figured a way to do such a dreadful thing, but it's disgusting.
I pray he/she/they're caught, sent to prison, and the key gets lost deep within the ocean. Toni

It's out of control Toni.

It seems the net is an increasingly more dangerous place to be by the day and yet so much depends on it...heck...so much would screech to a halt if the net collapsed but sometimes I wonder if that's what will be necessary to put a stop to people who would use it for criminal behavior.

Catch 22 I tell ya!

Hi Asleep. How have you been?

The computer is great for research and meeting nice people..Especially on GW.
It's also a great way to shop for items not sold locally.

But, it has a ton of drawbacks. Mailmen/women are losing jobs since snail mail is fairly obsolete. Most of our mail is junk mail. People seldom send Christmas cards anymore.

Stores depend on computerized regesters. My God! What would happen if a major disaster happened? If all computers went down?
Very few people know how to add/subtract/multiply/divide these days. I don't know your age, and I don't expect you to say, lol, but I remember when mom and pop stores sold groceries. Smaller stores added items on paper grocery bags. Of course, some stores used cash regesters, but they had nothing to do with computers.
How would ppl shop?

I guess the computer was always somewhat dangerous, especially purchasing. But, it's gotten much worse over the years.
The other day I received an email from Amazon. It said, I needed to complete an order. An order that consisted of 3 items totalling near 4,000.00. Sony products..Products I didn't glance at, let alone place.

There's people on the net, 'especially elderly,' who don't know better. Elderly people are targets. I feel sorry for them.

Like you, if my computer kicked the bucket, I'd panic. On the other hand I'd get a lot more work accomplished. :)

The net is now a necessity, like a phone or tv. But, are they really necessary? I wonder.

So, is surfing the net going to cause disaster? What's the chance of being stalked or people finding our personal information?
How many viruses will we get visiting a website?
How many hackers are out there? Most important, why are they not caught?

Asleep, I don't have the answers, but after hearing the news last night made me rethink...people are evil.
Why would anyone want to ruin others' hobbies? How can people take advantage of anyone, especially the elderly?

Yes, people are evil. So sad.

Maybe I made a big deal out of "nothing", but that same morning I also found that one of my businesses credit cards had been compromised (still in my possession) but several transactions had been run on it. So I had to spend several hours rectifying that situation to keep things from being shipped to Jang Wang in Singapore at my expense. I see that it doesn't bother some of you, thats fine, I respect your opinions and feelings, but PLEASE respect ours as well, the ppl who it has upset or offended. I never said I had a problem with Russel Nursery, and I agree with Dave that I found it interesting, and possibly beneficial. But where my problem DOES lie, is the improper use and possibly unethical obtaining of my email address and using it in a way that I have NOT approved, and agreed to in a manner to benefit, whether financially or otherwise, the offending party. I never said WHAT he got for his services, but he got something, other wise he wouldn't have gone to all the work and effort. I also did a little searching and rain2fall is correct for the most part, while it has NOT been made illegal by any legislative bodies, all the courts where it has been taken have ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, NOT the spammers! However, the only way to stop it is in Civil Court, NOT Criminal Court by forcing them to pay up. Many Spammers have had to pay out BIG in Civil Court for their offenses. So in the future, I suggest to the offending parties to send emails to ppl who have registered to receive communications from them, which would NOT be considered SPAM. I would also be interested to know where the offending party obtained our contacts since he claims that they were not culled from GWeb. Did anyone understand the first para of his 2nd explanation? He IS correct though when he said that it was easy to assume that he had gotten them from here, that's where the evidence pointed. He hasn't been active on the forum for some time that I have seen, and all of a sudden he shows up with a ridiculous and suspicious excuse for his actions. My concern is that a situation like this could sour the opinions or upset many of the knowledgeable and heavy contributors into leaving which could lead to the overall decline of what is a very informational and helpful resource to me and many others. I'm not trying to start a war, I just wanted ppl to know what I had uncovered and judge for themselves. Eliot PS-James, I'm in the same boat as you. I only use my email on here for GWeb, and personal communications with other forum members. Which begs the question, did I communicate privately w/Steve at some point? Not that I recall, but I can't say for certain one way or the other. I prob. over reacted...I've been known to do that...especially on a day when I prob. should have just stayed in bed b/c it went from bad to worse. I'm not saying I don't have a prob. with what he did, that I just may have made a bigger deal than necessary. BUT I don't think my actions were any worse than the actions that lead to this. I pay for most of my purchases using cash. Believe me, it does not dribble like sand through my fingers - ask my kids. I do have some problem remembering where some of the purchases were made, but get receipts for most purchases. I'm inclined to believe the claim that has often been made that when currency doesn't leave one's hands, for many users of credit cards, there is a tendency to buy more things. As for the store's cost of doing business, the store charges the same for the goods, whether paid by cash or card - there isn't a surcharge to use a card, as there should be. Though some of you make some good points about less accounting, fraud or fees to Brinks (though they need to make a number of visits, in any case). I've sometimes asked clerks at stores whether they'd rather be paid from the proceeds of the credit card purchaser's purchase or mine, and most say that they don't think that it matters. I say that if the store pays their wage from my purchase, they can get cash in hand tonight - and a full $1.00 for each $1.00 owed. But if they were paid when the store gets the money from the credit card purchase, they wouldn't get paid for about 6 weeks ... and for every $100. that the store owed them, they'd get about $98.00 (maybe less). Most had never thought about that. My computer is sort of old, and I suspect that I may have a virus, possibly a trojan horse - I was notified a while ago that something had arrived that the virus cleaner couldn't handle. I don't keep friends' email addresses on my hard drive. That gives me an idea - maybe I should collect the purported addresses of the guys who send me all of that scam crap on my hard drive, so that the thieves who may harvest stuff from my computer might get theirs and send them a lot of junk. But I've found that a number of the addresses that the email scammers give are fake. Sometimes when they include a number of other addressees, I send a "Reply to Everyone" making fun of their claim, especially the ones offering male enhancement ... or other pharm stuff ... or porn ... and asking whether, if a smiling salesperson at my door gave me a false name or fake address, what possibility do they think there might be that I'd ever consider doing business with that person? And I don't use my computer for credit card payments or banking. Howver, I don't need to pay 53 cents or so postage to send checks to pay for most of my utility bills, credit card, etc. - the bank does that for me. Were I not a senior, I guess that I'd have to pay them a fee per payment. Maybe then I'd get an updated computer and use it as many of you do - son has been lobbying that I should. I won't pay an annual fee to carry a credit card. Actually, I don't have one that offers rewards, either - I think that they are less common in Canada, but some Canadians may disagree. I've considered getting one that gives a rebate to my university, or a charity, such as Amnesty (their newsletter arrivng this morning suggested that). But not towArd a new Chevy - that'd be useless to me, as I have no plans to buy a new car. I'm not about to pay Costly or Scam's Club for the privilege of walking into their store, either - about a buck a week, even if I only enter once a month ... or three. Buying gas of a certain brand allows me a (small) reduction in my renewal fee for CAA next year and I often buy at that station, price being the same ... but don't use credit card. I haven't signed up for loyalty cards at various stores, either. I note that, with A & P at least, often when they put the "Air Miles" logo, with statement of the number of miles acquired, on a product ... they don't mention the price of that item ... which often is no bargain. Before you guys trash me anymore I just wanted you let all of know devastating it is to stumble upon a public forum with all your personal background out there for anyone to make a stab at it. I really went through a lot getting my kids, I went would go weeks without seeing my children, my ex would make fake doctor's appointments in order to get so called co-pay and prescription money, she used the kids in everyway to scam money from me. Of course I had a court case but it was constanly postponed and went on for over a year. I much as I wanted to get even I stayed within the legal system and now I have custody of my children. Even after i had them full time i had to still pay child support until that part of the legal system was taken care of, so yes financially I was sinking. They are not monsters like many of you have made a stab at, they are 2 wonderful and sweet kids. They went from having to repeat Kindergarden (missed almost 40 days of school with mom)to being top of their class. I am not a bad parent like many of you have suggested. While all this was going on my full time job I had for over 12 years was cutting back our hours, child support payments still of course remained the same(not paying that would have landed me on another forum I guess)so I started taking photography serious because it was easy to see my job was going to vanish. I started part-time and started to make money and yes it did require computer time. Just as I predicted my old job is now gone and I am now a Full-time photographer with a store-front studio. Just like any self-employed job you make lots a sacrifices at first and little money but now I am doing quite well. As you can see I had a lot in my lap and it was quite stressful. She went from getting my full attention from getting it when I had time, I never wanted it that way. I NEVER saw her as an instant "mommy". I knew from the minute I saw her I wanted to marry her. True, I did have visions of us all together but that was only from the fact I Loved her. I do intead still have her engagement ring, I have been offered money for it but I still hope one day I will be able to place back on her finger. Will I wait till my kids are grown up and go off to college so we can pick up from where we left off...Yes, I Love her that much. I am not a villian guys, I'm just a guy that was pesented with a lot of challenges and I am becoming a better man each and every day.

Congratulations on finding a live doormat. I guess _you're_ happily married, but would your wife say the same thing if asked? As to not answering your questions, you totally missed MY point, which was that many men end up unfavourably comparing their wives to the fantasy girls they see at the strip clubs. And then they become dissatisfied with their wives, and then everything goes downhill. Why should a wife have to imitate a stripper to keep her husband's interest? Presumably if she wanted to be a stripper she'd have been one in the first place. If a man wants a fantasy wife, he should marry one. Yes, his wife's feelings are more important because unless that was the deal when they married, he shouldn't be moving the goalposts, especially when he can see that it's something that upsets her, makes her feel insecure and inadequate, not necessarily jealous. This is called _consideration and compromise_. No doubt there are activities his wife foregoes because she knows her husband wouldn't be happy about them.

Quick answer: MONEY. In a country which idolizes it as the capitalist nation in which I reside,people will do anything to appear "superior" to their neighbor in wealth because of the whole "he who dies with the most toys wins" mentality.

And yes...they will devour the elderly,the infirm,the innocent,and anyone else they can get their hooks into.

It's human nature...and humans are scum(thankfully with a few noteworthy exceptions).

Asleep. I thought you lived in US...Do you mind saying where you live? If not, it's okay.

People are horrible, evil and greedy no matter where one lives.
Previous hackers who were caught resided in US.

We get daily phone calls from scammers. USA area codes.
Some listen to our voices, then hang up.
Others ask personal questions. I hang up.

With all that's going on, people will most-likely worsen.

In our area, the biggest crime is strangers going to elderly homes, claim they work for village hall, etc...They get into innocents' homes, then steal.
I don't know why many elderly people keep money in their houses instead of a bank. But, thieves sense where their money is hidden.

Criminal not only target the elderly, but watch for 1. single women and 2. people who work during the day.
A couple months back, 'ppl who worked,' homes were being robbed 2-3 times a week. The criminals were caught..Thankfully.

The world is a scary place..that's for sure. Toni

Oh but Toni,..I DO live in the usa...That wonderful country so driven by greed that a man would sell his brother for a nickel...just to get "ahead".

Yes it's getting worse alright. The culture as of late celebrates getting that money asap and by any means necessary. All the cool kids these days are "gangstas". They see their criminal heroes on television and aspire to be like them...to get rich or die trying...you know...the american dream!

Not much can be done about it from what I see. :/

If your computer has a camera, put a hat/bag/post-it note over it whenever you're not using it. Who knows when "they" are watching? I put mine in a drawer- too creepy.

Yes, I agree about TV. Not only 'gangstas' but murderers. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching suspense, etc, but haven't any intention of parroting murderers actions.
Some people do. Copycats.
The media sure doesn't help matters.
They sniff a story and print/talk about anything that comes to mind. I'm so sick of hearing, 'our sources say.'

For a while teenage suicides were up. Why? Because each death was big news, and tv movies were made, among other violent actions shhows.

So, an insecure person thinks, 'if 'x' person can do it, I can, too.'

Hi Purple. Yes, my computer is one-in-all..including camera on the screen.
I'm not worried people will spy on us...odds are low.
For those who are concerned 'someone' is watching, the Post-It is a great idea.

I'm still curious how it was done. Hackers should put their talent to use, instead of ruining lives.
