timing of cutting scion wood and grafting?

I've been grafting apples, pears, persimmons, and mulberries for about 3 years (and I plan to add pawpaws this year), and I've had at least some success with everything I've tried, but I feel like I ought to know more about timing, in particular. How far in advance before grafting can scion wood be cut? I assume the fridge is the best place to keep it? I've wrapped scion wood in a damp cloth and then in plastic. I've had better success going straight from tree to tree, but I've also missed my opportunity that way. Maybe the cloth I've wrapped scion wood in was too damp? If I'm using scion wood out of the fridge, should I wait until I see bud swell on the rootstock? Are there any significant differences between how I should handle scion wood or graft any of the above types of trees?

Straight from tree to tree works good when you see the scion buds starting to swell a bit.

I don't think wrapping the scion in towel is good,..the growth of mold can be enhanced this way. Have the scion's loose in a plastic bag or hard plastic container with a moist piece of paper towel on bottom. You can store them several month. Check about every 2 or 3 weeks,... might need to change out the towel.

Seng, You can order budwood from the Citrus Clonal Protection Program for a nominal cost. They have Chandler, Reinking, Sarawak, Mato Buntan, Kao Pan & Thong Dee pummelo budwood (scions) available 3 times a year. The next cutting is June 12, 2013. They also have a lot of information about Huanglongbing & Asian Citrus Physllid. All their budwood is certified HLB & other known pathogens free. There are strict rules that they explain about using & transferring budwood. You can get started here: http://ccpp.ucr.edu/index.html Be warned, you do NOT want to break the rules. Some nitwits in the LA area imported some HLB infected budwood from Asia a few years ago. The USDA & CDFA chopped down their trees & fined them. Not so terrible. The lawyers with the California citrus growers then went after them & destroyed their lives. Citrus growing in California is a multi-billion dollar industry. They have no mercy for anyone who might harm the industry however innocently. The regulations are not so difficult to learn & follow. Be smart. Good luck with the pummelos!

At home scion wood is usually stored in the refrigerator at around 34 degrees and wrapped moist paper towels and placed in a zip lock bag like you already did and also made sure it is not in the back of the refrigerator because it is close to freezing there. I think scion storage this way can last several months before spring grafting.

I have access to a pomegranate that does well in AZ at 4500 ft. Winters get to 20s and maybe a few nights colder. Plant has leafed out. Can send if you send mailer with postage or if you want special priority from post office send enough for me to buy one of those mailer boxes. I have just started to root cutting for myself. Or I can try to make more cuttings and you can contact me in the fall. It is possible we have emailed before. Variety is unknown, dates from 1920s or 1930s and is lighter pink and sweet.
